New Server

Our server had a serious disk crash yesterday and all items posted after Friday have been lost, as well as anyone who registered after that time.

I've moved this site to Dreamhost, which provides more bandwidth & disk space than my previous host.

On My Wish List: The WiFiPod

http://www.mcelhearn.com/article.php?story=20040929092813548

A WiFiPod... At first glance, this sounds like fluff. What's the point of having an iPod that "communicates" via WiFi (or AirPort; I chose to use WiFi because it just sounds perfect with iPod.)? It's not to stream your music to others in Starkbucks; it's certainly not to pick up music streamed by others. No, it's so you can use your iPod as a remote control.

575 MB/sec, 2.7 Terabytes, under $3000 for G5. Intrigued?

I've been messing around with disk arrays for uncompressed high definition video capture and editing, and I've put together this disk array for my Mac G5 that has sustained read speeds of about 575 MB/sec (yes, that's megaBYTES/sec), has 2.7 terabytes of formatted usable capacity....and costs less than $3000. Most other vendors charge $8000 to $15000 for that kind of storage capacity and throughput, and most aren't capable of moving over half a gigabyte of data each second.

The article discusses how I did it, where to get the components, what this is useful for in HD video post production, what are the other parts of a low cost, high quality HD edit suite, and links to other related articles on the site.

The article can be read on http://www.hdforindies.com

Review: Belkin Bluetooth mouse

I've been looking for the ideal Bluetooth mouse almost as long as I've had my PowerBook G4. Unfortunately this isn't it. I chose the Belkin bluetooth mouse for its price and number of buttons, and because Microsoft's Bluetooth IntelliMouse isn't compatible with Macs.

The Belkin mouse is fairly large, but is very comfortable to use if you're right-handed. If you have a computer with Bluetooth built in, you won't need to use any adapter with it, which makes it more convenient than regular cordless mice.

In addition to the usual two buttons + scroll wheel, it also has a thumb button. Unfortunately no software is available to assign functions to the buttons, and it won't work with USB Overdrive.

The other drawback is the battery life. It only runs about 3 weeks on a pair of Alkaline AA batteries, and when the batteries die, the first sign is that it suddenly stops moving although the buttons still work. It features an automatic power saving mode which causes it to shut off & disconnect automatically if it isn't used for a certain length of time. When that happens, clicking any button will re-connect. Until you get used to that feature, it can be pretty disconcerting.

I would recommend looking at other Bluetooth mice.

Sixth Sense Software Releases New Versions of Macintosh Point of Sale Software

Sixth Sense Software has released Version 6 of both Sixth Sense POS and Sixth Sense Cafe, advanced point of sale software for retail and restaurant operations management. The new versions include an entirely new user interface and many new features. Sixth Sense Software has also implemented new web presence and support resources which are more comprehensive and informative that ever before. Sixth Sense Software's Macintosh business software aims to take advantage of Apple's latest efforts to expand into the growing small and medium business market.

Sixth Sense POS 6 and Sixth Sense Cafe 6 have been designed from the ground up to be easy to use, facilitating increased efficiency, faster sale making capabilities, and far simpler user training than ever before. Both the owner/operator and the cashier were taken into consideration when designing this software, to satisfy business needs across the user spectrum. The inventory management database delivers any sales report you can conceive of. Choose from a list of standard reports or create your own. Sixth Sense POS 6 and Sixth Sense Cafe 6 will also allow you to create and print your own barcodes and labels. Inventory ordering and receiving are done automatically, as these and other business operations have been designed to be as automated as possible, leaving the computer to manage affairs while more time is dedicated to customer service.

Sixth Sense POS 6 and Sixth Sense Cafe 6 are native to Mac OS X. Mac users can finally connect with the business answer they have been searching for and been unable to find. Sixth Sense Software has designed their products to bridge the gap that exists between Apple users and the world of business. Now you can run your business with the dependability and stability of an Apple computer, and the OS X operating system.

Sixth Sense Cafe 6 has added significant new features to what is already the leading food service point of sale solution for Macintosh. The use of table ordering and sign in/time clock functions have been made optional, and a new interface allows dedicated use as a bar, cafeteria or coffee shop station, with maximum user efficiency. Sixth Sense Cafe 6 also gives servers more options for managing table bills.

Sixth Sense Software aims to promote an increasingly strong level of customer service. To this end they have created a comprehensive online support website which includes video tutorials, extensive manuals loaded with diagrams and pictures, extensive FAQ and more. Sixth Sense Software will continue to focus on this area, to provide greater resources for Sixth Sense hardware and software products. Sixth Sense Software also has available installation and training packages, and new toll free phone support.

Sixth Sense Software Co. Inc. has been providing service on a global level for over eleven years. They provide point of sale software both for retail and restaurant operations, and all the necessary hardware for point of sale applications. It is the goal of Sixth Sense Software Co. Inc. to be an industry leader in the point of sale field and in the provision of Apple Macintosh business solutions. A respected member of the St. Albert business community, they also support local events and organizations.

ESPN.COM LAUNCHES ESPN MOTION FOR MAC

ESPN.com announced today the availability of ESPN Motion, its popular video tool, for Apple Macintosh users. Previously available only for computers running on the Microsoft Windows operating system, ESPN Motion delivers high-quality video content to sports fans multiple times daily on ESPN.com. Created through cooperation with the Walt Disney Internet Group, the proprietary and patent-pending tool allows more than two million active users per month to view original content, highlight and clips from ESPN studio shows without buffering or streaming. ESPN Motion also allows advertisers to run television commercials online.

With the availability of ESPN Motion, sports fans using Mac’s will also have access to the ESPN Motion Showcase (http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/motion/showcase/index) – the online destination where fans can create custom video playlists from a clearinghouse of all the ESPN Motion video content available at a given time. Using an interface that allows for either single click or drag-and-drop control, the user creates a fully flexible playlist in which they can stop, start, shuffle, reshuffle and add or subtract video clips. Clips are played in an enlargeable video screen, and both the individual clip duration and total duration of the playlist are shown. Fans can pause the clips and control the audio volume with a single mouse click.

ESPN Motion for Mac operates optimally in the Safari, Netscape/Mozilla and Firefox Internet browsers, but also operates on a limited basis in Microsoft Internet Explorer for Macintosh. Setting up a Linux print server

In a previous article, I talked about setting up a Linux box as a file server for a Mac network. Here's how I set it up to work as a print server.

The easiest way to get it working is to install CUPS, if it isn't already installed. You'll then need to make a few changes to the configuration file for CUPS, normally /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, although the location may be different depending on your Linux distribution.

Make sure the following lines are uncommented, or add them if they aren't present:

Browsing On
BrowseProtocols cups

Add the following line as appropriate for your network IP addresses. In my case, my router assigns IP addresses in the range 192.168.0.* so the broadcast address is 192.168.0.255.

BrowseAddress 192.168.0.255

To allow machines on your local network to locate the printer, add the following line, also using the appropriate address range for your network:

BrowseAllow 192.168.0.*

In several places, you'll see a line 'Allow From 127.0.0.1'. After each of those lines, add the following, also using the appropriate address range for your network:

Allow From 192.168.0.*

After you restart CUPS, any printers attached to your server should show up as shared printers. You should also be able to connect to CUPS on the server with a web browser by going to http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:631/ (using the server's IP address or host name).

If you're using an Epson printer, you can use the command line tool escputil to check the ink level, clean the print head, print a nozzle test, or align the print head. For example, to show the ink level, type:

escputil -i -q -u -r your_printer_device
(on my machine, the printer port is /dev/lp0)

Armor2net Personal Firewall3.12: Launched by Armor2net Software to Protect PCs

Sparks, Nevada, U.S.A. – Armor2net announces the release of Armor2net Personal Firewall, a program for the Windows operating system that helps protect computers from the threats on the Internet and World Wide Web. With Armor2net Personal Firewall in place, end-users can breathe a sigh of relief.

Armor2net Personal Firewall software provides a complete spectrum of Internet security and Internet privacy for computers. The program protects the computer from hackers, data thieves, and other Internet-based dangers. Armor2net Personal Firewall carefully monitors the computer and tracks all connections, both incoming and outgoing. This allows the user to determine which connections are allowed and which are not. The software will show complete details of each connection, so the user can turn off unsafe connections and block dangerous Internet sites.

In addition, Armor2net Personal Firewall is able to stop Internet pop-up ads, a feature that can be customized for each individual Web site. The program will also search your computer for spyware, and remove the spyware components safely. Armor2net Personal Firewall allows the user to grant and deny access to the Internet on a per-application basis, which will prevent harmful worm, Trojan horse, and spyware programs from infiltrating your computer. The program also alerts you of any intrusive behavior coming from the Internet.

Armor2net Personal Firewall has an easy-to-use interface and is very intuitive. Unlike most of its competitors, Armor2net is truly “intelligent” firewall software that allows many of its functions to be automatically processed. The application is perfectly suited for home and office, for new users and those with greater experience.

System requirements
Armor2net Personal Firewall will run under Windows 98, ME, 2000, and Windows XP. It requires 32MB of RAM and 20MB of free hard disk space.

Availability
Armor2net Personal Firewall is available for $19.99 from the Armor2net Web site at http://www.armor2net.com

Mellel 1.8 released, including Outliner, OpenType support

RedleX today released Mellel 1.8, a major update to the leading word processor for Mac OS X. Mellel 1.8 offers several innovative new features and enhancements, including the most advanced Outline support among word processors today, the first implementation of the advanced OpenType technology in a word processor on Mac OS X, and enhanced language support, including support for several features and languages that were not supported on Mac OS X to date. The update is free to all registered users of Mellel

"It's been 5 months since our last update -- the longest time between updates in Mellel's history -- but anyone who will take a look into Mellel 1.8 will understand immediately that it was worth the wait," says Eyal Redler, CTO at RedleX. "The Outline feature in Mellel, of which I'm particularly proud, is exactly what our users grew to expect: powerful and flexible and at the same time very easy to use."

The new Outline feature in Mellel includes a special side pane showing all the headings in the document displayed hierarchically. Headings in the outline can be moved and removed with the content following them, shifted in the hierarchy, displayed in various ways, used for navigation, and more. All, of course, alongside viewing the actual document in the document window.

Another important addition in Mellel 1.8 is OpenType support. Mellel is the first word processor on the Mac to implement OpenType support, which offers several typographical advantages and adds crucial support for various languages. "OpenType support was another Mellel-or-PC situation for many users," claim Guy Hivroni, cofounder and chief GUI designer for Mellel. "Up until now, if you wanted to write in Arabic, Persian or Hebrew with proper positioning of pointing marks or if you wanted to write in Syriac at all, your only choice was to migrate to the PC. Now, you can use Mellel and stay with the Mac."

========================
WHAT'S NEW IN MELLEL 1.8
========================
The new version of Mellel several new features, enhancements, and improvements, in two main areas:
1. Outline
2. OpenType technology support

---------------------------------
Outline
---------------------------------
1. Outline pane: Displays the document structure hierarchically, side by side with the document content.
2. Navigating: You can navigate through the document by clicking on any outline item.
3. Organise: You can rearrange the document structure by dragging and dropping outline items. The items will be dragged with the relevant content following them.
4. Display of labels and captions (tag flows) separately or combined with the main structure 'tree'.
5. Promote, demote or change: You can promote, demote or arbitrarily change the hierarchical position of any item in the document structure. Any changes you make will be reflected immediately in the document (e.g., headings will change depending on the 'level' you promote or demote them to).
6. Insert: You can insert new items into the outline either through the auto-numbering palette or via the contextual menu.
7. Formatting the outline: You can control the appearance of outline items by changing their format in the Edit Numbering Flows dialogue. E.g. you can set things so that titles will only be displayed in the document, while numbering will only display in the outline.

---------------------------------
OpenType support
---------------------------------
8. Advanced typographical options: Support for Small caps, special superscript and subscript, fractions, special ligatures, special figure (number) shapes, ordinals, swash, justification and stylistic alternates, and more.
9. Glyph substitution and correct positioning for all Roman scripts, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew and Syriac.
10. Windows OpenType fonts: All OpenType fonts, most especially those by Adobe and those created for Windows, will work with Mellel just like Mac fonts.
11. Syriac: First and only implementation on Mac OS X of full support for Syriac, including contextual shape changes (initial, medial, final, etc.). Support for Syriac works with all the Windows versions of Beth Mardutho Syriac fonts (http://www.bethmardutho.org/meltho/).
12. Arabic and Persian: Mellel will now support any OpenType font for Arabic and Persian, with an extended support for accurate pointing positioning, the full set of ligatures, decorative swashes, and more.
13. Hebrew: Mellel will now support (again, first and only application to do so) any OpenType font with full support for pointing and trope marks. One of the best (and free) fonts can be found here: http://www.sbl-site.org/Resources/Resources_BiblicalFonts.aspx .
14. Special "Language" control to select the language applicable when using OpenType features (e.g., selecting French if you want special options for French applied when such options exist in a font.

---------------------------------
Improvements
---------------------------------
15. Automatic scrolling was significantly improved, either when writing or when navigating in the document.
16. You can now change the flow for a note using the Change menu or the contextual menu. E.g., you can select a footnote and change move it to the endnotes flow (or any other flow you have in your document).
17. Improved support for input methods and applications like Grammarian and TypeIt4Me.

---------------------------------
Localised versions
---------------------------------
18. Localisation with the initial release: Czech, Danish, Dutch, Esperanto, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish. Swedish.
19. Expected soon: Hebrew, Persian, Norwegian, Welsh.

Mozilla Firefox PR1 adds RSS Support

Yesterday mozilla.org released a preview of Firefox 1.0 with major security fixes and some interesting new features. Live Bookmarks allow you to bookmark an RSS feed, which will appear as a bookmark folder containing all of the headlines in the feed. On many sites with RSS feeds, such as this one, you'll see an orange RSS icon in the bottom right corner of the window. Clicking it will add a live bookmark for the site's feed.

Firefox also supports extensions which add functionality, such as a calendar, gmail notifier, and blogging functions.

However, the Mac version of Firefox still has some very annoying window handling bugs, which I found serious enough to send me back to Camino, despite Firefox's improved functionality. In particular, there's no bring all to front command, selecting a window from the windows menu sometimes doesn't work, switching tabs doesn't change the window title, and after installing an extension, the extensions window can't be closed.

HD For Indies has a Write-Up on How To Do Low Cost, Uncompressed HD Editing Stations for Under $18K

Hi there -

I run a website called HD for Indies, I write about HD for independent filmmakers with a focus on high quality, low cost solutions. I've just written two articles about breakthrough stuff to bring down the cost of HD editing systems.

The first article is an overview article on putting all the low cost HD solutions together - how to build a G5 based, 3.2 TB RAID 5, 3 Apple LCD monitor editing station with HD monitoring for under around $17,500 with all off the shelf, currently shipping hardware/software. Of course it can be done for less, but this would be the client impressive, killer setup.

The second article is about Mac drivers for the Highpoint RocketRAID 1820A card. Geeky boring? Normally yeah, but this allows for low cost SATA arrays to do uncompressed HD work for very low costs - as low as $1.21/GB including cards, drives, cases, everything. Apple/Huge/Medea are all $5-$7/GB. And it scales to 3.2 TB, enough space to do a 1920x1080 4:4:4 RGB feature with all the trimmings.

“We added support for USB Flash Drive MP3 players and I tested it over a summer of weekends spent at the beach with the kids.” said Donna Johnson, President of Mireth Technology Corp. “The first thing I found was that I could only use one earpiece because I needed to keep one ear open. I couldn’t hear both tracks but I could hear the kids. So we added the mono mixdown feature to put both tracks on both earpieces. This also turned to be a great way to share the player with my husband, without having to take turns. The MP3 player was now almost perfect, except it only played an hour of music. So we added the variable quality burn feature. At AM Radio quality burn, I got 4 hours of music on a 64mb flash drive.”

Key features of Music Man include:
- Rips Audio CDs to MP3 or to Ogg Vorbis, one track at a time, or the whole CD
- Converts between MP3, WMA, Wav and Ogg Vorbis

- "AM Radio" quality burn option to get 4 hours of music on a 64 mb USB Flash Drive
- Mono Mixdown feature for for Both Tracks/One Ear listening on USB Flash Drive
