Mireth Technology adds CDRW shredding to ShredIt X – Version 5.5. released

Vancouver, BC, July 30, 2004 -- Mireth Technology Corp. has released version 5.5 of ShredIt X, its computer privacy software that shreds instead of deletes data so it can't be recovered. Version 5.5 adds CDRW shredding.

As new medias evolve, so does ShredIt

With this new version, ShredIt X now shreds CDRWs in addition to shredding files, folders, disk free space, hard drives and external hard drives. “I was shipping a business card layout to the printer using a used CDRW when I realized that I had no idea whether the previous data on the CDRW was confidential and was it recoverable, said Donna Johnson, President of Mireth Technology. “We'd either have to restrict CDRW use to strictly in-house, restrict CDRW use to non-confidential data, or find a way to shred CDRWs before they were re-used. Our solution was to add CDRW shredding to ShredIt X."

The need for ShredIt

Because throwing data in the computer trash does not remove the file contents from the hard drive, the data can be recovered by someone else. Users who need to dispose of confidential data on an ongoing basis appreciate how easy ShredIt is to use - just drag the file on to the ShredIt icon and ShredIt will securely delete the data so it can’t be recovered. Users who want to erase the contents of a hard drive before disposing of a computer can be confident that using ShredIt as directed will accomplish the job. And there’s a ShredIt version for every Macintosh and every Windows computer.

Pricing and Availability

ShredIt X for Mac OS X is available for immediate download, or on CD, starting at $19.95. Registered users of previous versions of ShredIt X can upgrade for free. Educational pricing and volume discounts are available. ShredIt is also available for Mac OS7, OS8, OS9 and for Windows. For more information, visit www.mireth.com/shredit.html

Apple & Real disharmony

Following Real Network's announcement of Harmony, which allows music in other formats to be played on an iPod, Apple issued the following statement:

We are stunned that RealNetworks has adopted the tactics and ethics of a
hacker to break into the iPod(R), and we are investigating the implications of
their actions under the DMCA and other laws. We strongly caution Real and
their customers that when we update our iPod software from time to time it is
highly likely that Real's Harmony technology will cease to work with current
and future iPods.

Real replied that they believe "Consumers, and not Apple, should be the ones choosing what music goes on their iPod".

"Harmony follows in a well-established tradition of fully legal, independently developed paths to achieve compatibility. There is ample and clear precedent for this activity, for instance the first IBM compatible PCs from Compaq. Harmony creates a way to lock content from Real's music store in a way that is compatible with the iPod, Windows Media DRM devices, and Helix DRM devices. Harmony technology does not remove or disable any digital rights management system. Apple has suggested that new laws such as the DMCA are relevant to this dispute. In fact, the DMCA is not designed to prevent the creation of new methods of locking content and explicitly allows the creation of interoperable software." said Real in their statement.

My opinion: Choice is good. Harmony doesn't remove DRM or allow you to steal music; instead it converts music to other formats while preserving the DRM. It effectively opens the iPod to music downloaded from other sources.

One common criticism of the iPod in the PC press is that it's tied in to iTunes Musc Store and won't play music downloaded from other stores. Harmony can eliminate that disadvantage, and I'm sure it would help sell more iPods by allowing it to play more formats.

Buena Software Releases Au Naturel for After Effects, Final Cut Pro and Combustion

Buena Software, Inc. today announced the release of Au Naturel, a new plugin for Adobe After Effects, Apple’s Final Cut Pro, and discreet Combustion for both Mac OS and Windows. The plugin, which sells for $79.00US through the end of SIGGRAPH (August 12th, 2004), includes tools for producing realistic lens blurs, adjusting the exposure of your footage in f-stops, performing extremely high quality transformations, and compositing with multiple alpha channels. Users can download the plugin and obtain a free time limited serial number by going to the Au Naturel web page at http://www.buena.com/aunaturel.shtml.

Buena Software, Inc. president Darrin Cardani explains how Au Naturel works: “When you film a scene, then convert it to a digital format and bring it into your host application, the data has gone through many different transformations. Between the electronics in the camera, the conversion to digital data, and the compression applied to it, the data your editing or compositing application receives is no longer representative of what really happened in the scene you filmed. Au Naturel strips away the transformations that were added to your footage and allows you to work in linear RGB, which more closely mimics how light works in the real world.”

Au Naturel works in a 32-bit per channel floating point linear RGB color space, giving it a realism not found in other plugins. Blurs produced with Au Naturel cause the same type of blooming in bright areas that defocusing your camera’s lens does. Motion blur produced with Au Naturel’s directional blur looks more realistic than the host application’s built-in tools, too.

In addition to reproducing real blurs, the plugin also includes an extremely high quality transformation tool that allows users to scale, rotate, skew, and translate their footage with sub-pixel accuracy. This produces much higher quality results than the transform or motion tools built into most host applications. And unlike other plugins that only improve the scaling, Au Naturel lets you perform transformations that include rotating, skewing, and translating, too, giving you the most freedom with the highest quality.

But it doesn’t stop there! You also get the ability to perform composites in linear RGB. Since linear RGB mimics how light interacts in the real world, this gives you results that are far superior to compositing with other tools. And you can even choose to have a separate alpha channel for each color channel, allowing you to create even more realistic results.

Release date: July 26, 2004

Manage Your Search Engine Web Rankings

Caphyon LLC is pleased to announce the release of Advanced Web Ranking 3.0, a tool that helps check your web site position on all major search engines. Advanced Web Ranking runs on Mac OS X, Windows 98/2000/XP, Linux and Solaris.

Checking your web site position is a very time consuming task. For example, if you have 10 keywords that you want to monitor, and you want to check the top 20 positions for 10 search engines, you need to perform about 200 (10 keywords * 10 engines * first 2 pages) individual searches to get the results. Then you need to compare the results one by one to find where your site is positioned. It may take you days to complete this task if you do this manually. That's where Advanced Web Ranking comes to help.

Advanced Web Ranking is able to query over 200 search engines and quickly find out if you're moving up or down in the rankings, or if your site is listed at all. It will track the progress of your rankings over time and display that information in an easy to read and understand graphical and tabular reports. It can help you check not just the position of your website but the position of your competitors' web sites as well.

Advanced Web Ranking has the ability to generate and email reports after an update was finished. Couple that with the Scheduled Updates ability, and you will be able to turn on your computer in the morning and find reports on your websites ranks waiting for you in your Inbox. As a SEO, you can have updates being run and sent to your customers every night without even lifting a hand. Various types of reports (Current Rank, Top Sites, Web Site, etc.) can be created in any of the formats Advanced Web Ranking supports (PDF, HTML, Excel, XML or Text). Then they can be emailed to any of the addresses you pick from the Address Book, or saved to a folder where you can access them over the Internet.

What's new in Advanced Web Ranking 3.0

This version features a new way of matching the URLs using regular expressions, the ability to display change information in the Overview report, and many improvements to the printable reports.

- Matching URLs using regular expressions.
- Added change information to the Overview Report.
- Added filters to the Overview report.
- Link to the search engine results page in the printable reports.
- Show preferred search engines.
- Added new language translations: German, Italian, Spanish.

Advanced Web Ranking costs USD $99 for the Professional edition. Users who don't need to create printable reports, or schedule automatic updates can purchase the Standard edition for USD $49.

The application can be downloaded from:

A look at the new iPod

While I was at ADHOC, I got a chance to check out the new iPod.

Compared to my 3rd generation 40G iPod, the 4G is quite a bit smaller and thinner. The click buttons are actual buttons, not touch buttons like the ones on the 3G. They require a bit of pressure, so you can't click them accidentally. The new iPod has a built-in speaker which can be used for audible feedback when clicking buttons.

The menus have been rearranged, with a new Music menu which includes the playlist & browse features.

RealNetworks introduces Harmony for iPod compatibility

Harmony Technology Enables Consumers to Transfer Secure Digital Music to All Popular Devices including the Apple iPod and devices from Creative, iRiver, RCA, Rio, Samsung, and palmOne.

"Compatibility is key to bringing digital music to the masses," said Rob Glaser, founder and CEO, RealNetworks, Inc. "Before Harmony, consumers buying digital music got locked into a specific kind of portable player. Harmony changes all that. Thanks to Harmony, consumers don’t have to worry about technology when buying music. Now anyone can buy music, move it to their favorite portable device, and it will just work, just like the way DVD and CDs work."

"Interoperability of devices and jukebox software is one of the biggest challenges for today's music consumer," said Thomas Hesse, Chief Strategic Officer and Head of Global Digital Business, BMG. "RealNetworks' Harmony Technology is the first to address this issue by giving the consumer flexibility and choice."

"EMI's goal is to allow consumers to access our music on as many legitimate platforms as possible, and seamlessly, across a range of devices. RealNetworks’ Harmony Technology will make it easier for consumers to enjoy their digital music in a truly flexible way," said Ted Cohen, SVP Digital Development and Distribution, EMI Music.

"I'm excited about anything that means more flexibility and availability in terms of how people enjoy music. It's great to see RealNetworks make this step so that people can stop worrying about whether the music they buy will work on their favorite device," commented Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam.

Harmony technology will be demonstrated for the first time on Tuesday July 27th at the Jupiter PlugIn conference in New York City. Beginning on Tuesday, a beta test version of RealPlayer® 10.5, the first consumer product to use Harmony Technology, will be available at www.real.com/harmony. Harmony Technology will be available later this year in other music products from RealNetworks including Real’s market-leading Rhapsody® subscription service.

With Harmony Technology, RealPlayer Music Store supports more than 70 secure portable media devices, including all 4 generations of the iPod and iPod mini, 14 products from Creative, 14 from Rio, 7 from RCA, 9 from palmOne, 18 from iRiver, and products from Dell, Gateway, and Samsung. Generally speaking, Harmony supports any device that uses the Apple FairPlay DRM, The Microsoft Windows Media Audio DRM, or the RealNetworks Helix DRM, giving RealPlayer Music Store support for more secure devices than any other music store on the Internet.

ADHOC Conference Report

I've been at the ADHOC Conference, formerly known as MacHack, since Wednesday.

Although the conference had fewer attendees than previous years, it's still the same conference and all of this year's sessions were Mac related. We had as many high quality sessions as previous MacHacks, plus cocoa training from Big Nerd Ranch. We also had a great keynote by David Pogue. I've posted a picture album here.

ADHOC/MacHack 20 will be back next year at the same time, hopefully bigger and better.

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy

A few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's WiFi Seeker, a convenient keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced WiFi Spy is a rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform identically.

To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

I find that my 15" Aluminum Powerbook G4 can connect reliably anywhere the WiFi Seeker shows at least two lights and will often work where only one light is on. I walked around my home and it was able to detect a signal anywhere I could connect with my powerbook. It also found wireless networks at some of my neighbor's homes, although I haven't tried to access them. Note that the WiFi Seeker doesn't indicate whether a network is open or WEP protected.

Today I went to a local restaurant that has a wireless hotspot and the WiFi Seeker showed all four lights. I didn't have my powerbook with me to try it, but someone else was using a TiBook and was getting excellent reception.

oXygen XML Editor version 4.2

We are glad to announce the release of the oXygen XML Editor version 4.2.
Version 4.2 of oXygen XML Editor adds as main feature support for presenting schema related information while editing or browsing an XML document. For more information see http://www.oxygenxml.com.

New in oXygen XML Editor 4.2
=================================
* Schema Model View
* Content completion shows schema documentation
* Annotated XML schemas
* Contrast control
* User control over the transformation in progress
* Improved search support
* Breakpoint operations enhancements
* Allow to define XSLT extensions locations
* Ready to use JSP 1.2 XML editing support

Details...

* Schema Model View
The Model View provides schema related information for the document elements and attributes. The content model, the element type, the attributes, the attribute type and constraints are presented in a compact manner giving the user an insight in the document schema while editing or browsing the document. XML schema annotations are extracted and presented for both element and attributes thus offering an instant help to the document author.

* Content completion shows schema documentation
The XML Schema documentation is presented by the new content completion support. The content completion offers now additional information for the element and attribute proposals. It will lookup the schema annotation and will make the documentation available to the author in a simple and elegant manner.

* Annotated XML schemas
To take advantage of the schema documentation support oXygen bundles annotated schemas for XSLT stylesheets and XML schemas.

* Contrast control
The contrast control options allow to change the transparency levels for markup or text. With a smart popup button located on the toolbar the user can easily change the focus of attention from markup to text and viceversa. The transparent markup option combined with locking the tags can be used for instance for safe and easy text only editing.

* User control over the transformation in progress
After starting a transformation a new action becomes enabled allowing the user to stop that transformation. Thus the user is in control and can decide to stop a time consuming transformation at any time.

* Improved search support
Support for finding all occurrences in a file was made available via the contextual menu and through a configurable shortcut. If no text is selected then the word at cursor will be automatically detected and searched for.

* Breakpoint operations enhancements
Added support to easily add, toggle or remove breakpoints in the Breakpoints Panel.

* Allow to define XSLT extensions locations
The XSLT processor's extensions paths can be specified using a system property. Please consult the user guide for details.

* Ready to use JSP 1.2 XML editing support
A new document template was added to allow easy creation of JSP 1.2 documents and the samples have now a JSP entry.

Best regards,
oXygen Development Team

Dave Matthews Band snubs iTunes Music Store

The Dave Matthews Band has started selling their music online through Napster and plan to add other services soon. However, they refuse to sell through iTMS on the mistaken belief that Apple requires each track to be sold separately.

As anyone who's shopped in iTunes Music Store probably knows, some albums are sold as entire album only, rather than individual tracks.

Apple Third Quarter Results

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2004 third quarter ended June 26, 2004. For the quarter, the Company posted a net profit of $61 million, or $.16 per diluted share. These results compare to a net profit of $19 million, or $.05 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue for the quarter was $2.014 billion, up 30 percent from the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 27.8 percent, up from 27.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 39 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The quarter’s results include an after-tax restructuring charge of $6 million. Excluding this charge, the Company’s net profit for the quarter would have been $67 million, or $.17 per diluted share.

Apple shipped 876 thousand Macintosh® units and 860 thousand iPods during the quarter, representing a 14 percent increase in CPU units and a 183 percent increase in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

“It was an outstanding quarter—our highest third quarter revenue in eight years,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Our Mac-based revenue grew a healthy 19 percent, and our music-based revenue grew an incredible 162 percent. We’ve got a strong product portfolio, with some amazing new additions coming later this year.”

“We were very pleased with our 30 percent year-over-year revenue growth and our operating margin expansion,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the fourth quarter of fiscal 2004, we expect revenue of about $2.1 billion and earnings per diluted share of $.16 to $.17, including $.01 per diluted share in restructuring charges.”

A few interesting items:

* Portables accounted for a record proportion of Apple's sales, 53% - 240,000 iBooks and 220,000 PowerBooks.

* Apple sold 416,000 desktop Macs, including 183,000 eMacs, 173,000 Power Macs and 60,000 iMacs.

* IBM's problems delivering "G5" processors were blamed for Apple's delay in announcing and delivering the new (G5-based) iMac family, now due in September, as well as Power Mac G5 models. The 2.5-GHz (liquid-cooled) G5 is expected to be constrained throughout the current quarter, while 1.8- and 2.0-GHz models will be in short supply until August.

* Medium and large business represented about 9% of Apple's sales, according to the company's last internal estimate.

* Higher education sales were up 40% over the previous year's, while K-12 sales were constrained by low funding in the market but rose 3% year-over-year

The user may choose to import a folder that exists on a WebDAV or FTP server. The project will have a logical structure similar to the content of the remote folder. The files from all the remote sub-folders are added into the correspondent logical folders.

* Improved search support
The find operation wraps when searching in the editor. A new option to search in the project files has been added to the contextual menu of the project tree.

* Learn attribute values
With this option enabled the learn document structure can learn also the values of the attributes and will present them in the content completion popup after a learn structure operation.

* Handle BOM on save
For documents with UTF-8 encoding the user can specify if the Byte Order Mark should be written or not or preserved if a BOM was present when the document was loaded.

* Close editor tabs on middle button click
This is a really handy way of closing the editors.

Tune Media Announce Tune-Up for GarageBand

We want to give users the ability to create whole tracks using our loops rather than just giving them a disc full of drums. Tune-Up Pack 1 is available at just $34.99 including delivery worldwide....an absolute bargain!
