Relogix now available to translate x86 assembly-language to C

MicroAPL Ltd, specialists in automated porting and code
transformation tools, today announced the general availability of
Relogix/86, an advanced new software conversion tool which takes
80x86-family assembler source files and automatically re-codes them in
readable, maintainable C. The new product follows the launch last year of
Relogix/68K, which performs a similar conversion for 680x0 and ColdFire
assembler code.

Unlike other translation tools, Relogix produces natural, maintainable,
commented C source files, comparable to those which a skilled human
programmer would produce if asked to re-write an assembler source file in
C. As well as reorganizing the program flow to use standard C flow-control
constructs such as 'if', 'for' and 'case' statements, Relogix also chooses
sensible data types and names for the C variables which correspond to
register- and stack-based data in the original assembler program. The C
code which is output by Relogix follows user-specified style guidelines,
and is intelligently commented even where the code flow has been
substantially altered during the conversion.

Relogix/86 can translate most 32-bit x86 or Intel IA32 assembler code
written for the 'flat' memory model, and is aimed at both desktop and
embedded applications. It can be used either to port code to a new
architecture, or simply to provide enhanced maintainability of the software
by engineers who may not be familiar with the original assembly language. A
version to handle 16-bit segmented code is planned for release later this
year.

Richard Nabavi, Managing Director of MicroAPL, commented: "This product is
part of a planned rollout of Relogix assembler-to-C translators. Over the
coming months we will be announcing further products for migrating
assembler code from other major architectures, including some 8- and 16-bit
CPUs."

Examples of the translations Relogix produces can be found on the MicroAPL
web site http://www.microapl.co.uk/asm2c. Relogix is sold both as a
standalone tool and as a cost-effective porting service over the internet.
MicroAPL also offers traditional consultancy services based on the Relogix
technology.

MicroAPL Ltd was founded in 1979 and is based in Sussex, England. The
company specializes in translation tools for porting legacy software to new
architectures, as well as providing consultancy services in systems
development and cross-platform porting. In addition to Relogix, MicroAPL
offers PortAsm, a range of assembler-to-assembler porting tools which
target modern architectures such as the PowerPC and ColdFire. MicroAPL's
tools have been widely used for major porting projects in both the embedded
and desktop computing arenas, and have been licensed by major semiconductor
manufacturers. Further information on Relogix, PortAsm and other MicroAPL
products can be found at http://www.microapl.co.uk.

TUMULT CO. RELEASES HYPEREDIT 1.0

NEWS RELEASE

FROM: Jonathan Deutsch, CEO of Tumult Co.

jonathan@tumultco.com or (765) 532-7755

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TUMULT CO. RELEASES HYPEREDIT 1.0

Tumult Co. today announced the release of its new lightweight HTML and PHP editor for Mac OS X, HyperEdit. Tumult HyperEdit uses a "split" view with one side a preview pane to display the web page live as a user types. HyperEdit breaks the tedious cycle of writing HTML/PHP, saving the file, then reloading and viewing the page in the browser by combining the writing phase with the viewing phase. This clarifies the effects of changes and speeds up the overall process of making a web page. W3C-based validation will red-underline any mistakes. It uses the same rendering engine found in Safari, so it is not only standards compliant, but also very fast.

Other key features of HyperEdit are customizable code snippets with keyboard shortcuts, linked files that refresh the page if they are modified, a javascript code evaluator, and the ability to view HTML source code generated by PHP.

Jonathan Deutsch, CEO of Tumult Co., is very optimistic about the possibilities the new software package allows. "The power of live editing is best shown when trying to make small changes. Users can play with their pages in HyperEdit, and tweak it to look exactly how they desire without wasting time. It is a big win in productivity." HyperEdit is also useful for writing forum and blog entries, as well as producing larger sites. Additionally, HyperEdit is a great tool for learning HTML, CSS, Javascript, and PHP.

HyperEdit is shareware and costs $19.95 USD. More product information and a link to download can be found at:

http://www.tumultco.com/HyperEdit/

This is the first software release by Tumult Co. It was founded in 2004 by Jonathan Deutsch. Deutsch recently graduated Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Sciences degree, and will begin working at Apple later this year.

Intego announces: ''The sky is falling''

In yet another press release, Intego announces a new "trojan horse" masquerading as a Microsoft Office 2004 installer.

The trojan horse was supposedly discovered bya MacWorld reader who downloaded and ran an application from the Gnutella peer-to-peer network. Intego carried out tests on the information received and has identified a Trojan horse - AS.MW2004.Trojan - that affects Mac OS X. This Trojan horse, when double-clicked, permanently deletes all the files in the current user's home folder.

The application in question is simply a 100k compiled AppleScript. Note that it's always been possible to put a fake icon on any file, even in Mac OS 8 or 9, by simply pasting it into the Get Info box in the file.

You're safe as long as you don't run applications from questionable sources (like almost anything you find in Gnutella, which is full of fakes and mislabeled files). Microsoft has never used that particular icon for any downloadable file, and a real office installer is a lot larger than 100k.

Ben's Game 1.0 available for download

Ben, nine years old, is in remission from Leukemia. He also had a unique wish.  Ben’s wish was to create a video / computer game in which the hero kills cancer cells.

The game would have several levels of battling the cells. Ben felt that this game would be helpful for kids like him who have cancer, a way to fight back and relieve some of the pain and stress involved with treatment.  Ben is a big fan of video games and computers — so the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation went out to local game companies to find a champion to make Ben’s wish come true. A hero stepped forward: Eric Johnston of LucasArts.  Not only did Eric want to make Ben’s wish a reality, he wanted to involve Ben in every step of the process.  For months, Ben and Eric have been meeting on a regular basis to make the game just as Ben has envisioned it. Now you will have a chance to see it too!

    XML Editor version 4.0

We are glad to announce the release of the <oXygen/> XML Editor, version 4.0.
Version 4 of <oXygen/> XML Editor improves further the usability and adds new features, the most important one being a full featured XSLT debugger in the standalone version. <oXygen/> XML Editor can be freely evaluated for 30 days and can be purchased for a 23% off promotional price of $74 until the 15th of May ($48 for academic use).

    http://www.oxygenxml.com/

<oXygen/> is an XML and XSLT editor and debugger written in Java with Unicode support. It offers end tag auto-completion and a powerful code insight that guide the user to write valid XML content. The code insight can follow a DTD or an XML Schema or even can learn the structure from a partial edited document, allowing the rest the document to be created faster. An important thing is manipulating XML content and XSLT is the normal way to do this. XML and XSL documents can be easily associated one with the other and the transformation results can be viewed as text or HTML.

Oxygen validates XML, XSL and XSD content, reporting errors with description and line number information. More documents can be logically organized in projects. It comes with the latest Docbook DTD and stylesheets. Includes the Apache FO Processor, being able to generate PDF and PostScript. Other FO processors can be configured as plugins. Oxygen provides a special layout when entering in debugging mode to show the source and the stylesheet documents side by side and to show also the results and special debbuging views. Debugging can be done using Saxon 6.5.3 or Xalan 2.5.1 transformation engines. All debugger capabilities are provided (step into, step over, step out, run, run to cursor, run to end, pause, stop). XPath expressions are evaluated automatically during debugging. The output is dynamically presented as it is generated by the transformation process.

    KeepAnEye 1.6

    Hello
I'm happy to announce that KeepAnEye 1.6 has just been released.

KeepAnEye is a multipurpose monitoring and notification utility which helps you to stay informed efficiently. It lets you track data sources by providing visual representations which can be freely organized in windows, in the menu bar or in the Dock. Moreover, it observes them and warns you when something interesting happens using a general notification system. RSS feeds, pictures, eBay auctions, web pages, software updates, disk usage, IP addresses… Taking advantage of a flexible plug-in architecture, various kinds of data sources are supported within a single, homogenous application.

This release includes major enhancements of the visual rendering of the observers. Aside the original display windows, KeepAnEye is now able to display the observers in the menu bar and in its Dock icon. Six observer plug-ins have been updated to provide support for those new kinds of display: Disk, File/Folder, IP Address, MacUpdate, Picture and RSS.

In the menu bar, the observers mostly look like Menu Extras. They can be freely reordered and possibly resized (when the observer plug-in allows it). In the Dock, the observers are displayed sequentially at user defined speed and frequencies. Both kinds of display take advantage of their natural menu to provide access to actions and/or extra information about the observer.

The observer update processing engine has been fully rewritten. It is now much more light and flexible and has been greatly optimized so that the observer updates are more reactive.

The new Apple Refurb Store observer plug-in has been introduced. It surveys the refurbished products periodically available at discounted prices on some European Apple Stores. This plug-in is able to notify when the observed store opens or closes, and when new products become available.

The Display Observer notification setting has been replaced by the Window Display action plug-in which can show or close the display window of the observer. This plug-in is accompanied by its counterparts for the other kinds of display, the Menu Display and Dock Display action plug-ins, which can show or hide the observer in the menu bar and in the Dock.

The new Shell Script and Disable action plug-ins have been introduced. The Shell Script plug-in is similar to the AppleScript one but executes custom scripts using specific shell interpreters. The Disable plug-in simply disables the observer to which the action is attached. It can be used to prevent further updates when the data source becomes uninteresting for instance.

This release also includes many other smaller improvements and corrections.

iCompositions.com launches world's first Internet Radio Station for GarageBand

iCompositions and parent MUGnetwork are proud to announce the launch of MUGRadio.com, the worlds first Internet Radio Station playing Mac users' GarageBand Compositions. Songs uploaded to iCompositions are streamed continuously to iTunes eliminating the need to visit the comment page of every song on iCompositions, saving users' time and bandwidth.

"We're extremely excited to provide such an amazing service." commented Dan Pourhadi, MUGnetwork and iCompositions Senior Partner. "Not only is iCompositions the premier venue for sharing GarageBand Creations, hosting about 1900 songs, it is now the easiest to navigate. We've been planning a service like this for some time, and we're thrilled to finally introduce it."

MUGRadio has been the single most requested feature in iCompositions' forums. Along with the diverse Garageband-created music from iCompositions.com, MUGradio will feature a GarageBand tip of the day by Brad Flickinger and a Mac tip of the day by Dan Pourhadi, as well as feature a lineup of terrific live and recorded shows.

"Mr. Answerpants" will be a mixture of live and recorded shows hosted by a Certified Apple Technician answering your Mac questions, as well as providing you with helpful Mac tips. "Dealing with a Day Job", hosted by Giovanni Cipolla, will focus on the 'trials and tribulations of having aspirations', and how a musician gets along in corporate America. "Hey, it's that guy", hosted by Michael Hill (aka ThatGuy), takes aim at being a unique Mac/music variety show, where anything goes. "Appletalk" will be an entertaining discussion on the week's Mac news and rumors, and "Exposé: Apple" will be an episodic look at the history of Apple. MUGradio will also future a daily half-hour Mac news show, as well as a variety of DJ'd shows featuring GarageBand compositions.

iCompositions has always strived to be the complete resource for GarageBand users. Recently compared to a Simon and Garfunkel concert in MacWorld Magazine, it gives 150MB of free upload space to every user who signs up and allows artists to purchase up to 450MB of space. Through GarageBand-related news, reviews, tutorials, downloads, and contests, iCompositions has solidified itself as a leader in the GarageBand community market.

iCompositions is the only GarageBand-specific Apple User Group and extends special offers to members of its "Super Star" program. With more than 8000 comments on songs and forum posts, iCompositions is the leader in community activity among GarageBand sites. Though GarageBand-centric, iCompositions welcomes users of other Mac music making applications like Soundtrack, Logic, and Reason. It has been recommended in the Wall Street Journal, MacWorld Magazine, Wired News, and the Detroit Free Press.

MUGnetwork is the parent organization of iCompositions, MacDesktop.net, and various development projects.

    OSX ''riddled with security holes''?

An article at Techworld claims that "Mac OS X riddled with security holes" and claims Windows is more secure.

    According to Kieren McCarthy:

The company is downplaying the issue but one security company at least is concerned that the vulnerabilities could be extremely serious. Secunia has given the five - yes, five - patches a "highly critical" rating and warned that they may allow hijacking, security bypass, data manipulation, privilege escalation, denial of service and system access.

In other words, it makes Microsoft's current Sasser problems look no more than a nasty nip. The difference of course is that Windows is the vast majority of the market and Macs account for only three percent of operating systems. There isn't a worm exploiting the holes as yet but the company is strongly advising users to download and install the patches as the OS looks like an easy target at the moment.

Of course this is pure FUD. Like any operating system, OS X has some security holes, and Apple makes every attempt to patch them as soon as possible.

One major difference between Mac OS X and Windows is that Windows by default enables all network services which most users probably won't use or aren't aware of. OS X, on the other hand, disables all network services unless the user specifically activates them from the sharing preference panel. Because of this, a Windows system will always have a lot of open ports that can easily be exploited. A Mac system, on the other hand, will only have open ports that the user specifically enabled, such as FTP or Web Sharing. Almost all of the Windows exploits take advantage of those open ports, such as messenger service, which almost no home user needs.

iCompositions.com, in an effort to provide the #1 venue for sharing Mac music creations, announced that it will provide all current and future Artists with 150 megabytes of free web space to upload their compositions. "iCompositions has always striven to innovate," said iCompositions "Record Executive" Dan Pourhadi. "We feel that our latest offering will solidify iCompositions as the single resource for GarageBand users."

Previously, iCompositions offered users 50MB of free space to upload GarageBand compositions. By tripling the ammount of free space, they will offer the most free upload space of any GarageBand community. The total free space given ammounts to 250GB for current users. iCompositions offers two additional space upgrade programs. Becoming a "Rock Star" allows Artists to upload up to 350MB of music for only $10 per year. Becoming a "Super Star" allows Artists to upload up to 450MB of music and gives them access to discounts on Apple Hardware and other miscellaneous products, an @icompositions.com email address, Free GarageBand Quicktime Tutorials, and their own "Artist Website" (coming soon) for $34.99 per year. In addition to upgraded storage space, iCompositions has released the iCompositions Creations Disc and multi-criteria ratings on all uploaded compositions. The iCompositons Creations Disc, or iCCD, is a collection of 20 of the most popular uploaded compositions uploaded to iCompositions' Auditorium, the premier venue for sharing GarageBand creations. All proceeds of the $4.99 CD help pay for costs incurred by giving away 250GB of space. Multi-criteria ratings in the Auditorium allow listeners to provide even more feedback to artists. Listeners can give a 1-5 rating for Concept, Creativity, Performance, and Production which will be posted along with their user name and an average of all four. iCompositions' multi-criteria rating system is the most advanced of its kind.

iCompositions is the premier venue for sharing GarageBand Creations. With more than 1800 compositions uploaded and 1700 users, it allows Artists to discuss GarageBand, learn tricks for using GarageBand, find GarageBand-related products, and share their creations. Created only hours after GarageBand was released, iCompositions has been a leading GarageBand community from its beginning. iCompositions is a subsidiary of MUGnetwork who's other properties include MacDesktops.net and MacMarket.net.
