ADHOC Featured Speakers Announced!

The organizers of ADHOC (the conference formerly known as MacHack) are
pleased to announce that after an exhaustive search, they've found not one
but two featured speakers for this year's Macintosh developer's conference.

One of the featured speakers is Jordan Hubbard, Apple's manager of the
Darwin (UNIX-based) core of Macintosh OS X. He's famous for co-founding
the FreeBSD project and being an active contributor to the Open Source
community. His career focus pretty well mirrors the range of ADHOC,
cutting edge technology that can be used and expanded on by all.

The official keynote speaker will be David Pogue, an author who gets
around. Not only is he the New York Times Technology Columnist and tech
expert for CBS News, but he is also responsible for a diverse series of
how-to books (over 3 million sold!) including the well-read "Missing
Manuals" series. He's also an accomplished music composer and longtime
Macintosh aficionado.

While ADHOC encourages experienced and accomplished Macintosh developers to
lead technology sessions in their expertise, beginning Macintosh
programmers and students of all ages are also encouraged to attend, there's
sessions geared to every level. Attendance to this conference is limited
to 400, and there are discounts off the Conference fee for registering
early (deadline is May 30th, 2004) and for leading a session (ADHOC is a
conference by developers and for developers). The early registration
deadline is fast approaching for this extremely worthwhile conference, so
ask your manager and/or take off time if necessary, get your name on the
list of confirmed attendees today! Check out the ADHOC website at
http://www.adhocconference.com for more information and to register
securely.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION INFORMATION

For attendees, discounted registration is available for early action. Full
attendees can register for $500 online (before 05/30/04), a savings of $50
off the regular registration rate. Students can register at a discounted rate
which includes access to the entire conference as well as a special meal
package.

Total attendance is limited to 400. Student attendance is limited to 50.
More details are available on the conference Web site.

AirPort Update 3.4.1

Apple has released an AirPort 3.4.1 software update. No information about what's new in 3.4.1, but I suspect it addresses the signal strength problems. In any case, I recommend waiting a few days before installing it if you're not running 3.4.

Win $1000 with your GarageBand song!

MusicOnTheMac.com is proud to announce its GarageBand Composition Contest.  With the launch of Apple's GarageBand, the anytime, anywhere, recording studio, a whole new genre of musician is emerging.  We here at MusicOnTheMac.com want your music to be heard, so as an incentive for you to upload your leading edge material; we're having a contest that will pay $1000 to the best original user submitted GarageBand composition between now and July 31st 2004.

To be eligible, you must have created the composition using GarageBand, (you will need to stuff (using Stuffit) your ".band" file and upload it to the site for verification), you also need to export the composition to an MP3 file and upload it to the site so that MusicOnTheMac visitors as well as judges can listen to your creation.  A panel of MusicOnTheMac.com editors will determine the winner.  Winners will be chosen based on overall use of GarageBand, general appeal of the music, and whatever sounds good at the time.  Any genre of music is eligible.  In the future, we may hold contests for specific genres, but right now, we're just anxious to get more people using GarageBand, and sharing their music with the MusicOnTheMac.com community.

The best of the user submissions will also be eligible to be played 24x7 on a soon to be launched Internet Radio Station that will only play GarageBand compositions.

MusicOnTheMac.com is a leading on-line community for musicians who use Macs.  While GarageBand is a big part of our audience, forums for Soundtrack, Logic, Reason, and many other products exist.  Up to date news, and reviews are also available.  For more information, please visit http://www.musiconthemac.com, or you can send an e-mail to info@musiconthemac.com.

Airport 3.4 Problems

Apple's new Airport Extreme 3.4 update has very definite problems with loss of signal strength and dropping connections. If you haven't installed it, don't do it. If you've already installed it, xlr8yourmac has an article that tells how to revert to 3.3.1.

In my own experience, iStumbler reported a signal strength of 60 when my powerbook is in the same room with my access point (a Netgear WGR614) and 37 on the opposite side of my home when running Airport 3.4. After reverting to 3.3.1, the signal strength is 70 in the same room and 48 on the opposite side of my home (about 100-110 ft). I also found that 3.4 often failed to obtain an IP address via DHCP.

iBook vs. PowerBook

Today Apple introduced new iBook G4 & PowerBook models. Here's my attempt to dispell any confusion between the two lines.

The toughest choice may be between the top of the line iBook and the low end PowerBook. Let's see how they compare.

iBook

  • 14" Display
  • 1.2 GHz G4
  • Airport Extreme standard, optional Bluetooth
  • VGA, S-video and composite video
  • 256MB DDR SDRAM expandable to up to 1.25GB
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics with 32MB of dedicated DDR memory
  • 133 MHz system bus
  • $1,499

PowerBook

  • 12" Display
  • 1.33 GHz G4
  • Airport Extreme and Bluetooth standard
  • DVI, VGA, S-video and composite video
  • 256MB of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM expandable up to 2GB
  • NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 graphics with 64MB of dedicated video memory
  • 167 MHz system bus
  • $1,599

For a difference of $100, the PowerBook gives you a faster processor & system bus, internal Bluetooth (a $50 option on the iBook), DVI output, twice as much video memory, and more RAM capacity. For cost-conscious users, the iBook may be a better deal while people who want the best performance will buy the PowerBook.

Apple announcements at NAB conference

Apple announced several new products at the National Assocation of Broadcasters (NAB) conference, which kicked off today in Las Vegas.

Motion is a new real-time motion graphics application. New procedural animation technology — called behaviors — creates movement and simulations without keyframes. Simply drag and drop one of over 40 customizable behaviors onto type or graphics. Motion also supports After Effects plug-ins.

DVD Studio Pro 3 adds slick new transitions, superb HD to MPEG-2 encoding, Graphical View, support for all professional audio formats — including DTS — and integration with Final Cut Pro HD and Motion.

Final Cut Pro HD supports HD (High Definition) video with the simplicity of DV. Capture DVCPRO HD over FireWire, edit using camera-native footage and output over FireWire with no generational quality loss. RT Extreme, now for HD, can deliver multiple HD streams, effects, filters and transitions in real-time to an attached Apple Cinema Display.

Shake 3.5 adds new shape-based morphing and warping tools to the powerful digital effects software used in the production of every Oscar-winning film for Best Visual Effects over the past seven years, including this year's winner 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.'

Xsan is a 64-bit cluster file system for Mac OS X that lets multiple computers concurrently access terabytes of storage on Xserve RAID over high-speed Fibre Channel. Now under development, Apple will ship Xsan later this fall for $999.

Personal note: not dead yet

Despite Steve Jobs' statement, Mac OS 9 is NOT dead. The reason I haven't been posting too much lately is because I've been busy writing & debugging Mac OS 9 software. After my company released an OS X product, there were many requests for an OS 9 version, so that's what I'm now working on.

Apple Reports Second Quarter Results: Earnings per Share Triples

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2004 second quarter ended March 27, 2004. For the quarter, the Company posted a net profit of $46 million, or $.12 per diluted share. These results compare to a net profit of $14 million, or $.04 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue for the quarter was $1.909 billion, up 29 percent from the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 27.8 percent, down from 28.3 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 43 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The quarter’s results include an after-tax restructuring charge of $7 million. Excluding this charge, the Company’s net profit for the quarter would have been $53 million, or $.14 per diluted share.

Apple shipped 749 thousand Macintosh® units and 807 thousand iPods during the quarter, representing a 5 percent increase in CPU units and a 909 percent increase in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

“Apple had a great quarter with 29 percent revenue growth and 200 percent earnings per share growth year-over-year,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We experienced growth in most areas of our business—most dramatically in selling a record 807,000 iPods, up more than 900 percent over the prior year.”

“We are very pleased with our third straight quarter of double-digit revenue growth,” said Fred Anderson, Apple’s CFO. “More importantly our results demonstrate operating margin expansion. Our balance sheet remains very strong with about $4.6 billion in cash and no debt. Looking ahead to the third quarter of fiscal 2004, we expect our fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year double-digit growth in both revenue and earnings, with revenue of about $1.925 billion. We expect GAAP earnings per diluted share of $.12 to $.13, including approximately $.02 per diluted share in restructuring charges.”

Create your own instruments in GarageBand

If you're bored with GarageBand's built-in software instruments, don't fret - you can easily add your own.

GarageBand's software instruments are based on several generators, such as guitar, analog basic, piano, etc. Each generator has several standard variations, but you can also edit the parameters to make your own instruments.

After you create a software instrument track, double click it to bring up the edit window. Click "details" at the bottom of the window to show the customization controls.

Note that guitar is selected with the variation clean electric guitar. By clicking the edit button at the right, you can change the sound parameters to produce a very different sound.

You can also do the same for any of the effects, including amp simulation.

Experiment with the different generators & effects, and you'll probably come up with some great sounds.

Apple reponds to Trojan Horse threat

Apple has responded to the Trojan Horse security advisory issued by Intego on Thursday. "We are aware of the potential issue identified by Intego and are working proactively to investigate it," Apple said in a statement. "While no operating system can be completely secure from all threats, Apple has an excellent track record of identifying and rapidly correcting potential vulnerabilities."

Intego has also posted a Q&A page, which includes some misinformation.

Intego's Q&A states:

First of all, Mac OS X runs two types of applications: Cocoa and Carbon. Cocoa applications are native OS X applications, and have an .app extension. Cocoa applications are, in fact, folders containing all the bits and pieces of a program—code, resources, graphics, etc. The .app extension tells Mac OS X that an application is going to run natively.

Carbon applications are different. Most Carbon programs can run under either Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X, and, for this reason, have no .app extension. The Mac OS knows they are executable programs because of two resources, carb and cfrg. The carb resource indicates that it is a Carbon application and the cfrg resource indicates the location of executable code in a file's data fork.

This isn't quite true. Mac OS X supports two different kinds of executables: CFM and Mach-O. CFM executables are a single file and will run on both OS 9 and OS X. Mach-O applications are normally bundled into a specially formatted folder with the extension .app and will run only in OS X. Carbon applications can be in either CFM or Mach-O format, although Cocoa applications are always Mach-O. A modern OS X only Carbon application is nearly indistinguishable from a Cocoa application.

This trojan horse, which has never been discovered in the wild but is merely a proof of concept, involves a mismatch between the file type and the extention. In particular, a CFM application with the file type 'APPL' has the extension .MP3, which will cause it to appear as a MP3 file.

Intego discovers first Mac OS X Trojan Horse: MP3Concept

Intego, the Macintosh security specialist, has just released updated virus definitions for Intego VirusBarrier to protect Mac users against the first Trojan horse that affects Mac OS X. This Trojan horse, MP3Concept (MP3Virus.Gen), exploits a weakness in Mac OS X where applications can appear to be other types of files.

The Trojan horse's code is encapsulated in the ID3 tag of an MP3 (digital music) file. This code is in reality a hidden application that can run on any Macintosh computer running Mac OS X.

Mac OS X displays the icon of the MP3 file, with an .mp3 extension, rather than showing the file as an application, leading users to believe that they can double-click the file to listen to it. But double clicking the file launches the hidden code, which can damage or delete files on computers running Mac OS X, then iTunes to play the music contained in the file, to make users think that it is really an MP3 file . While the first versions of this Trojan horse that Intego has isolated are benign, this technique opens the door to more serious risks.

This Trojan horse has the potential to do any of the following:

  • Delete all of a user's personal files
  • Send an e-mail message containing a copy of itself to other users
  • Infect other MP3, JPEG, GIF or QuickTime files

Due to the use of this technique, users can no longer safely double-click MP3 files in Mac OS X. This same technique could be used with JPEG and GIF files, though no such cases of infected graphic files have yet been seen.

WinTranslator & MacTranslator Demo Editions

Generate Design Diagrams from Your Source Code in Minutes

Placitas, NM – April 5, 2004 - Excel Software is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Demo editions of its WinTranslator and MacTranslator reengineering tools. When used in conjunction with the WinA&D or MacA&D modeling tools, software developers can automatically generate live diagrams that represent the design of their source code.

WinTranslator for Windows and MacTranslator for Macintosh implement three types of reengineering:

* Class Models or CRC Cards from C++, Java, Delphi and Ada

* Structure Charts from C, Pascal, Basic and Fortran

* Data Models from SQL

The Product edition of WinTranslator can be used with the WinA&D, QuickUML or QuickCRC modeling tools. The WinTranslator Demo is only intended for use with a current Demo or Product edition of WinA&D. The same restriction and the approach described below also apply to the MacTranslator Demo running on Macintosh.

WinTranslator is a reengineering tool that extracts design information from source code files. It saves that information to text files that are imported into WinA&D. Unlike the WinTranslator product, the Demo edition encrypts these text files so that they are not human readable and can only be imported into WinA&D when running in a special Demo Mode. This approach allows evaluators to reengineer their own proprietary or classified projects and see the live results in WinA&D, but prevents saving or exporting the generated documents to disk.

Before importing files into WinA&D, the Developer must enable a special Demo Mode. The Demo Mode disables save, export and report generation features in WinA&D, but enables the import of encrypted files from the WinTranslator Demo. All other features are still available allowing the developer to view, navigate and explore the generated diagrams and dictionary information. The Demo edition introduces no file size or file count limitations, time restrictions or other constraints that would limit its use on large industrial-scale projects. After restarting WinA&D, the Demo Mode will no longer be enabled.

The WinTranslator and MacTranslator products are priced at $495 each for a Single User License or $50 for a Demo & Manual package. The Demo & Manual package includes a printed manual, PDF manual, step-by-step tutorial and free technical support. Contact Excel Software for site license and upgrade prices or visit www.excelsoftware.com for information and online ordering.

Now You Can Sell Your Music On iTunes

(HOLLYWOOD) - Independent artists and labels will be glad to learn that they don’t have to be distributed by a major label to get a distribution contract with the iTunes Music Store, now revolutionizing music sales with millions of dollars in downloads.

But finding out how to do it was often a painful and time-consuming process - until now.

http://www.higgs.com/publications/itunes-guide.html

Higgs Communications announces A Guide To Selling Your Music In The iTunes Music Store by Simon Higgs. This is the definitive guide to placing independently released music in the iTunes Music Store - and getting paid for every song downloaded.

Written exclusively for start-up and established independent record labels, A Guide To Selling Your Music In The iTunes Music Store is the much-needed how-to iTunes manual for producers, engineers, artists, managers, and attorneys handling band and label affairs.

One of the year’s top music business stories is the iTunes Music Store phenomenon, which offers Windows and Macintosh users the industry’s largest online music catalog of over 500,000 songs, industry-leading personal use rights and uniform 99 cents-per-song pricing. The iTunes Music Store offers music from all five major music companies and over 300 independent music labels.

A Guide To Selling Your Music In The iTunes Music Store shows the way there to independent labels and bands. It covers the entire application and contracting process, from approaching Apple to encoding and submitting music to the iTunes Music Store. It explains what the seller must know and shows where the pitfalls are in the process.

The guide focuses on the following areas:

· The Application Process

· Sending The Contract Back To Apple

· Encoding Your Music Using iTunes Producer

· Bonus Section Explaining ISRC Codes

A Guide To Selling Your Music In The iTunes Music Store is available (hard copy only) directly from Higgs Communications, LLC, for $20.00 plus shipping/handling, at:

Playfair strips DRM from iTunes Music

Playfair is a tool that converts protected AAC tracks purchased from iTunes Music Store to unprotected files.

When Apple opened the iTunes Music Store, they licensed a technology called "FairPlay" from a company called "Veridisc". FairPlay is a Digital Rights Management (DRM) system that limits a users rights on a digital media file that they've purchased and presumably downloaded. In the case of Apple's iTunes Music Store, when a user downloads an audio track from iTMS, it is a "Protected AAC Audio File". When used as intended, these files can only be played through the iTunes program itself. Furthermore, a particular computer must first be "authorized" to play the given file. FairPlay allows up to three computers and unlimited Apple iPods to be authorized to play the file. As DRM schemes go, FairPlay is only moderately offensive.

So what will playfair do for you? The playfair program is quite simple. It takes one of the iTMS Protected AAC Audio Files, decodes it using a key obtained from your iPod or Microsoft Windows system and then writes the new, decoded version to disk as a regular AAC Audio File. It then optionally copies the metadata tags that describe the song, including the cover art, to the new file.

The current version of playfair requres XCode and runs from the command line. For more information, visit the SourceForge project page.
