M-Audio KeyStation 49E still in short supply
There seems to be quite a shortage of M-Audio KeyStations. I've had one on order from MacMall (who still advertises them for $79) since Feb. 2. When I called again today to check on my order, I was told that they're backordered until Mar. 31 and that there are over 600 still backordered.
I had originally ordered one from the Apple Store, but I cancelled that order when I saw that it was due to ship Mar. 9 and MacMall claimed to be able to ship it the following week and they were selling it for $20 less.
Has anyone received their KeyStation yet?
Update: I just called the Apple store and was given a shipping time of 4-6 weeks.

Inferiis - Mushroom 1.3 Press Release
Hello
I'm happy to announce that Mushroom 1.3 has just been released.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mushroom 1.3
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mushroom is an easy to use developer tool for software localization. It has been designed to help the developers to create and maintain the localized resources and to keep them synchronized with the source code of their Cocoa projects. Mushroom also provides advanced features to improve team work, especially with third party translators.
Main features include
- Designed to work on projects.
- Reports all incoherences inside your project.
- Automatizes the whole localization process.
- Distributed localization support (team work).
- GUI for the "genstrings" and "nibtool" utilities
This release is a important update of Mushroom. It introduces several new features and improves many parts of the software.
The support for Xcode's projects has been added. Mushroom is now able to read the new project format and to recognize the new ".xcode" document bundles.
It also introduces the "NIB Helper" utility along the main application. NIB Helper is a GUI for the "nibtool" utility which has been designed to let you easily use Mushroom when working with Interface Builder's NIB files.
The text encoding and the format of the string dictionary files can now be specified for each Mushroom project. The settings are used when reading the files when opening or refreshing a project and when creating new files. Mushroom also provides conversion functionalities to preserve an homogenous state of the resources. The standard file format and the one used by WebObjects are supported.
In the previous releases, the key of the selected localized string was displayed above the localization edition text field. It is also now possible to display the localization corresponding to any supported language. That simple feature greatly improves the user experience when working on the localizations.
The performances of the application have been improved in many areas, especially when importing or exporting a project (orders of magnitude in some cases), and a few dialogs and inspectors have been revamped.
Mushroom 1.3 requires any computer running Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) or later with developer tools installed, and is fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther).

Global Moxie released Big Medium 1.3, a major update to the company's web content management system. Big Medium is browser-based software that enables non-technical staff to update websites without learning HTML. New features include WYSIWYG text editing, document uploads, 20 new widgets for webpage templates, and fixes for a number of reported issues.
"The new graphical editing interface makes editing website text as easy and familiar as using a word processor," said Global Moxie founder Josh Clark. "And the addition of document uploads means that it's easier than ever to share PDF files, Word documents or other downloads with website visitors."
Big Medium 1.3 is available now from the Global Moxie website at http://www.globalmoxie.com/. A free online demo is available at http://demo.globalmoxie.com/. The suite of Perl scripts is $129 for web servers running Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, BSD and other Unix-flavored operating systems. (A beta preview version is also available for Windows servers.)
The new WYSIWYG editor requires Internet Explorer 5.5+ (Windows only), Mozilla 1.4+ (Windows, Mac OS X and Linux) or one of many Mozilla-based browsers, including Mozilla Firefox 0.6.1+, Netscape 7.1, and AOL for Mac OS X. Users of other browsers can still continue to use Big Medium, but without the WYSIWYG editing features.
New features in Big Medium 1.3
- Big Medium's rich-text editor offers WYSIWYG editing for article content and descriptions, as well as the tip editor.
- The new "download" article type allows documents to be added to websites via Big Medium's easy-to-use interface. (A tabbed interface allows users to select from four article types: Text, Link, Download, Raw HTML).
- Twenty new template widgets provide enhanced control over the design of Big Medium's custom page templates.
- New settings in the Big Medium Setup and Site Setup dialogs allow administrators and webmasters to set max-size limits on document uploads.
A detailed list of new features and fixes is available at the Global Moxie website: http://www.globalmoxie.com/moxie/about/news/bigmed13_details.shtml
Sophisticated software, affordable price
Priced at just $129, Big Medium is carefully designed to fit within the technical resources and budgets of even the smallest businesses and non-profits. A single installation of Big Medium can manage hundreds of websites on a single server, allowing organizations to provide individual departments, products, employees, teachers or students with their own sites. One price does it all: There are no per-seat licenses or hidden costs.
Big Medium uses custom design templates to manage any website in its own unique look and feel. The templates are simple to create and change, allowing users to give a website a complete design makeover in a matter of minutes, no matter how large the site. Big Medium also comes with pre-formatted templates, or "skins," allowing users to get up and running with a new site in minutes. Once the sites are set up, administrators can also use Big Medium to backup and duplicate entire sites.
In addition to making it easy to update and maintain website content, Big Medium also gives websites a broad range of interactive features and design elements: easy insertion of pullquotes and images into article pages, content syndication via RSS or JavaScript, printer-friendly pages, "e-mail this page" function, animated navigation bars, and more.

MacHack becomes ADHOC
ADHOC 2004 happens on July 21st through July 24th, a few weeks after Apple's Information Dissemination conference. This should give plenty of time to absorb what was said there, get some work done for your bosses, and come to ADHOC with great ideas for spontaneous projects. ADHOC is a great companion to WWDC; and if the budgets can't afford Apple's conference, ADHOC is a wonderful way to get an introduction and hands-on experience with Apple's new technologies.
Two great keynote speakers are scheduled to appear: Jordan Hubbard, Apple's manager of BSD Technologies, famous for FreeBSD & his countless Open Source contributions; and David Pogue, New York Times columnist, author, piano player.
Being a conference by Mac Developers for Mac Developers, you can help contribute to ADHOC's content. If you know something you're particularly good at, have learned some new Apple technology over the past year or so, and you'd like to lead a session on this topic, your fellow participants would definitely appreciated your efforts! Speakers also enjoy a very healthy discount off the already affordable standard registration fees. Check out the Call For Speakers page (http://www.adhocconf.com/callforsessions.html ) for further details.
Here are important dates to remember:
- Last day for Early Registration 4/16/04
Make plans to be there A.S.A.P.
Book your stay at the hotel early for rates of under $100 per night for participants. Check the website ( http://www.adhoc.conf ) for details.

Dissolve Factory Updated
Chicago,IL - Buena Software, Inc. announced the release of an update to their Dissolve Factory plugin for creating new types of transitions in After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and now Final Cut Express.
This update, which is free to registered users, adds support for Apple’s Final Cut Express video editing application. In addition, it now works as a transition rather than an effect in Final Cut Pro making it significantly easier to use. Users can read more about Dissolve Factory and purchase it for $39.95 from Buena’s website.
This update eliminates the tedious work with the razor tool in Final Cut Pro that previous versions required. Since it is now a full-fledged transition, instead of an effect plugin, you can even set it up as your default transition.
Dissolve Factory allows users to create new types of cross fades based on various properties of their video. For example, they can choose to fade dark areas faster than light areas, creating a more film-like transition than the standard cross dissolve. Or they can choose to fade specific colors first or last. And the properties used to fade out the outgoing clip can be different from those used to fade in the incoming clip. This allows a wide variety of new and interesting, yet tasteful cross dissolves.
Buena Software, Inc. offers video, image and audio processing software and development services. For more information about their consulting services and/or products, visit their web site at , or call them at (847) 259-7970.

World's Safest Operating System
A study by the mi2g Intelligence Unit, a London-based security firm, reveals that the world's safest and most secure online server Operating System (OS) is proving to be the Open Source family of BSD (Berkley Software Distribution) and the Mac OS X based on Darwin. The study also reveals that Linux has become the most breached online server OS in the government and non-government spheres for the first time, while the number of successful hacker attacks against Microsoft Windows based servers have fallen consistently for the last ten months.
To arrive at its conclusions, mi2g analysed 17.074 successful digital attacks against servers and networks. It states: "With Linux accounting for 13,654 breaches, Windows for 2,005 breaches followed by BSD and Mac OS X with 555 breaches worldwide in January 2004."
The group discounted the recent wave of worms, viruses and other attacks that have affected Windows systems worldwide. It confined the study to overt digital attacks by hackers.
"For the first time, the number of recorded breaches against government servers running BSD or Mac OS X worldwide fell to zero in January 2004," the analyst said.
Company executive chairman DK Matai said: "The swift adoption of Linux last year within the online government and non-government server community, coupled with inadequate training and knowledge on how to keep that environment secure when running vulnerable third party applications, has contributed to a consistently higher proportion of compromised Linux servers."

Fun retro software makes a comeback
Before Mac OS X, there were always lots of fun, useless little programs that did quirky things. Two of them are now available for Mac OS X.
Many oldtimers will remember MacPuke, which made a gross sound when the Mac ejected a disk. Well, it's back, and like the original version, it wears thin pretty quickly.
Mystery Science Theater fans may remember the old Torgo screen saver, based on a character from Manos: the Hands of Fate, which is generally believed to be the worst movie ever made. The new Mac OS X version works with the standard system screen saver. I strongly suggest turning off the sound if you use it.

Advanced Web Ranking v2.4 Released
Release date: February 16, 2004
Caphyon LLC is pleased to announce the release of Advanced Web Ranking 2.4, a tool that helps check your web site position on all major search engines. Advanced Web Ranking runs on Mac OS X, Windows 98/2000/XP, Linux and Solaris.
Checking your web site position is a very time consuming task. For example, if you have 10 keywords that you want to monitor, and you want to check the top 20 positions for 10 search engines, you need to perform about 200 (10 keywords * 10 engines * first 2 pages) individual searches to get the results. Then you need to compare the results one by one to find where your site is positioned. It may take you days to complete this task if you do this manually. That's where Advanced Web Ranking comes to help.
Advanced Web Ranking is able to query over 130 search engines and quickly find out if you're moving up or down in the rankings, or if your site is listed at all. It will track the progress of your rankings over time and display that information in an easy to read and understand graphical and tabular reports. It can help you check not just the position of your website but the position of your competitors' web sites as well.
Advanced Web Ranking has the ability to generate and email reports after an update was finished. Couple that with the Scheduled Updates ability, and you will be able to turn on your computer in the morning and find reports on your websites ranks waiting for you in your Inbox. As a SEO, you can have updates being run and sent to your customers every night without even lifting a hand. Various types of reports (Current Rank, Top Sites, Web Site, etc.) can be created in any of the formats Advanced Web Ranking supports (PDF, HTML, Excel, XML or Text). Then they can be emailed to any of the addresses you pick from the Address Book, or saved to a folder where you can access them over the Internet.
What's new in Advanced Web Ranking 2.4
======================================
This new version features two new interactive reports, the ability to define custom reports that can be executed after each update, and a new and improved documentation system.
* Added custom report templates.
You can now define custom reports that can be executed after each manual or scheduled update.

This new panel allows you to select multiple URLs which will then be highlighted in the report views.

This is the signature used when connecting to search engines.
* Modified how the Rank Evolution charts display the dropped URLs
* Added ability to select a random delay between search engine requests.

iCompositions posts a tutorial on the Soundtrack Loop Utility
In the second iCompositions Exclusive Article, themactech shows us how to create our own loops using the SoundTrack Loop Utility. In the article, he says:
"Apple's SoundTrack Loop Utility can help you accomplish such a thing. Don't let the name fool you, though. This baby isn't just for SoundTrack. You use it to view and manage the tags within Apple Loops, such as Descriptors, Genre, Instrument, Key and other useful information as well as create Apple Loops for both ST and GB. But the best part is you don't have to own SoundTrack to get it."

Phelios Releases a Valentine’s Edition of Swap and it’s 2 for 1
Phelios announced the release of a Special Valentine’s Edition of their game, Swap--one of many Phelios games made with the game engine, PTK. Upon launching Swap, players now have new Valentine Skins to choose from; one is called, “For Her,” the other, “For Him,” as well as the original Swap skin, “Classic.” In addition to the Valentine’s Skins, there are now 2 new sets of heart-shaped tokens to choose from, bringing the selection of sets to 4. Players also now have the ability to design their own token sets and add them to Swap.
The other sweet news is that Phelios is offering a promotional special for this Valentine’s Edition and players can purchase one Swap and get a second one for free. Since Swap is a shareware download, this means the second free Swap can be a gift for someone (a Mac or PC person) and the purchaser can request a second code for their free version if they contact Phelios via email with the name of the gift recipient. Upon receipt of the email request, within 24 hours, Phelios will respond via email with a second code that will correspond with the recipient’s name. Gamers that have previously purchased Swap are also eligible to take advantage of this promotion, and can request a second code from Phelios if they provide a name and if they are in the Phelios records (proving they’ve already purchased Swap.) This Valentine promotion is offered for a limited time and ends on February 15, 2004.

With Swap, work your mental agility to the umpteenth degree and match similar bubbles. Your score can skyrocket to exponential potential if you explode the loads of bonuses. Choose your many options and game style then match it with your personality:
-RUSH Mode: Want to play but in a hurry? Push your agility and mind to the minute. It’s timed play and you have exactly sixty seconds to haul…butt.
-CLASSIC Mode: Gives you a bit more leeway with a whole 5 minutes of play. That’s 300 seconds to earn heaps of points!
-MILLION Mode: Who wants to reach a million points? But more importantly, how speedy can you be? Flex your brain muscle (and fast!) to make that million.
-RELAX Mode: Why meditate when you can play Swap? Take a deep breath and exhale. Simply take your time in this game version of ultimate relaxation. Relax Mode embraces the thrill of chill and let’s you play as long as you like. Consider it even, a form of stress management.
Swap is a puzzle game for everyone, from small kids to the brainiest adults, from busy professionals with a minute of free time, to the dedicated game enthusiast who creates extra hours to challenge their personal best scores. The player is in complete control to choose easy, normal and hard settings, as well as choosing the game that fits his/her own personal style or mood.

Themes: Good, Bad, and Ugly
MacThemes.net has posted a look at the entries in the OWC/Unsanity Theme Contest. Let's face it: most themes, with a few exceptions, just plain suck.
The Aqua UI isn't perfect, but it's a lot better than most other themes. The most effective themes refine and improve on Aqua instead of changing it to something completely random.
The best things about Aqua include easy to find window controls (unless you're colorblind), readable menus & window titles, and good contrast between active and inactive user interface elements. A good theme will improve on it, such as refining the buttons & window elements, or replace the brushed metal appearance with something more subtle. Themes such as Max Themes Aqua Extreme & SmoothStripes are among the most effective because they improve on Aqua, eliminate some of its rougher elements, and make it more attractive.
On the other hand, themes which completely replace the user interface or make it look like another operating system may be fun as a novelty but quickly get annoying. They're not an improvement over the standard UI.

ADHOC: The Advanced Developers Hands On Conference
ADHOC, Formerly MacHack, will take place July 21-24, 2004 Dearborn, MI. Here are some details and a call for speakers.
ADHOC sessions!
We talk about things of interest to Mac OS X Developers at ADHOC, and that covers a lot of ground.
Some sessions are going to be about projects which use specific Mac OS X technologies, or talk about the technologies themselves. This bring to mind names such as Cocoa, Quartz, and Carbon.
Other sessions will cover subjects that are likely to be found running on other operating systems. To name only a few, we're thinking about PHP, Perl, Tcl, Apache, zeroconf, Rendezvous, and so on. The actual list of possibilities is quite long.
Hey, if something works on either Mac OS X or Darwin, the underlying open source operating system upon which Mac OS X is based, then ADHOC attendees are interested in how it works, how to program for it, or how to program with it.
We're also interested in related tools and technologies, like smart phones, new languages, amazing achievements, and working in multiple platform environments.
At no other time in the Mac's history has there been such a large selection of useful, working, robust tools that we can use to make dynamite solutions. There is a tremendous need to share with others how they all work.
That's what we do at ADHOC.
Session Speakers Desired!
ADHOC is a conference run by developers for developers, where you absolutely have to bring your own fun. So talk to us, we want you to show up and participate.
AdHoc needs speakers to lead sessions that discuss all this stuff, from innovations in BSD, where Darwin has its roots, to how to make OpenGL do amazing things. Four major revisions of Mac OS X have been released, with more to come, so there's plenty to talk about. There's probably going to be a great deal of interest in what you have to say about programming, running a business, working the press,...
This is how we set you up to do a session. First, send us an email at sessions@adhocconf.com. This first email should tell us who you are, where we can contact you, and provide a brief description of more or less what you want to tackle in a session. We will exchange emails enough to get you on the right track, and then we'll add your idea to the list and bug you about it a few weeks later after you've had some time to percolate on the idea. Then, send us a session title, a concise description about the session and a short description describing who you are and what you're about. After that, work on your project and your presentation, so when the conference rolls around, you'll be able to talk (or, well, gush) for an hour on your stuff. We provide some A/V assistance so that people can see what's on your screen while you talk.
ADHOC attendees mostly (not exclusively) are: Mac developers; students working hard to become developers; programmers working on other platforms and have more than a passing interest in knowing what's going on on the Macintosh; or aren't professional programmers but have a strong desire and the drive to understand how it all works.
We like sessions that talk about what you personally built that can run on Darwin or Mac OS X. An example of that would be is, oh, "This is How I Got Graphics Printing to Work." We also like sessions which survey a programming endeavor like "Exception Handling in Objective C" or "the GNUStep Status Report". Something loftier might be "The Salient Differences between Linux, BSD, and Mac OS X Kernels." Sessions on programming handhelds have been scheduled during each of the last few years. We also need people to lead sessions targeted for student attendees. Also, students can and do present sessions.
ADHOC is not about marketing, so session presentations need to be technical and not presented as a marketing vehicle.
Your presentation does not have to be a highly polished and practiced production number.
Session authors do pay the conference registration fee, but get a $100 discount.
We're anxious to see what kinda stuff you got! Let us know as soon as possible at sessions@adhocconf.com if you're thinking about doing a session.
By the way, you may also want to consider doing a paper. It's more work, but if you get your paper accepted you don't have to pay the conference registration fee, but you do have to 1) write a paper, and 2) do a session about your paper. The deadline for papers is a lot earlier than the deadline for sessions, note.
The conference will take place July 21-24, 2004, in Dearborn, Michigan. More information is available on the Web from www.adhocconf.com.
For attendees, discounted registration is available for early action. Full attendees can register for $425 online (before 02/28/04), a savings of $100 off the regular registration rate. Students can register for $50 which includes access to the entire conference as well as a special meal package. Total attendance is limited to 400. Student attendance is limited to 50. More details are available on the conference website.

Florida city plans to offer wireless internet access
The city of Wilton Manors, FL, a two square mile island city just outside Fort Lauderdale, plans to offer wireless internet access along the main street.
Anywhere Internet will set up a main tower at the Five Points intersection in the center of the city. That tower will beam a high-speed Internet signal to antennas that are about 11 inches tall, which will be stationed at points along Wilton Drive. The signal travels for about 300 feet, enveloping businesses, offices and shops.
City officials are also considering offering Wi-Fi throughout the Island City. If that happens, Wilton Manors could be the first municipality along the East Coast where residents can access the Internet anywhere within city limits without needing a telephone line -- even in their homes.
A Fort Lauderdale technology firm, Anywhere Internet, pitched its idea of making Wilton Manors Internet-accessible at a recent city council meeting, where commissioners got a crash course in Wi-Fi.
"We're helping the city move forward," said company president Bryan Kidd. "Wireless is certainly becoming the standard way in which business is done. Imagine sitting at a café with your laptop and a cup of coffee instead of being in the office?"
Wilton Manors is the right size to make that service available citywide, Kidd said.
"We decided that Wilton Manors would be a great city for us to do this project because it's small enough where we can manage it," he said.
Kidd says if the project succeeds along Wilton Drive, the company will work with officials to expand Wi-Fi citywide.
Other cities in South Florida are considering going wireless, including Coconut Creek and Key Biscayne.
Read the full story here or visit the home page of Wilton Manors.
Last year I moved from Wilton Manors, which has some of the highest property values, to the neighboring town of Oakland Park for a bigger and less expensive home.
