Technology Tracks Stolen Computers

LAKE RIDGE, Va. -- Police in Prince William County recovered more than $30,000 worth of stolen computer equipment thanks to modern tracking technology.

The computers were stolen from Country Wide Home Loans on Tacketts Mill Road in Lake Ridge. According to a police affidavit, the burglars broke through a window to get the computers and equipment.

However, the thieves apparently didn't know that the computers had been loaded with software that is designed to keep track of computers.

The software is called ComputracePlus and is made by Absolute Software. At regular intervals, the computer relays its location to a main office.

A stolen laptop gave its location as a house on Pilgrim Drive in Lake Ridge. That gave police enough information to obtain a search warrant.

"We executed a search warrant at that residence last night and came up with $33,000 in computers and property. All three suspects were there. All three were charged with burglary, grand larceny," said Detective Dennis Mangan of the Prince William County Police Department.

Read the full story here. For more information about ComputracePlus, visit www.absolute.com (a Macintosh version is also available).

The Hess Memorial Macworld Events and Party Page for Macworld Expo San Francisco (Jan 5 - 9) is the ONLY comprehensive source of events. Even if you don't go to the show, check the list for related Internet events. There's no reason to be left out just because you're not in San Francisco! I made the list, so you should check it twice. As a member of the Macintosh media, you need this list.

week. It is also *the only* web site with pass-along readership!

Users can help support the list by clicking the contributions link in the
navigation bar on the left. Send a contribution and maybe receive a rare party invitation!

Companies are encouraged to post a product announcement, contests, and cool booth events along with a small contribution. Please send a 2-line description and booth number so that users can get a head start on the best booths to visit. A $15 contribution is requested for these listings and a
contributions link is on the page.

Special thanks go out to Bare Bones Software, Small Dog Electronics and

Outage

Here's what happened earlier today, according to our web hosting provider:

Today there was a outage for about one hour. The word from the Datacenter is that there was a faulty fiber in their connection which needed to be replaced without warning. They are finishing up the repairs and you may experience intermittent latency as this completes. We apologize for the probelms this has caused as it was out of our control.

Worst Prediction of 2003

Rob Enderle said:

Apple is being driven out of every segment but consumer: Companies are driving out non-standard hardware and both increasingly view Linux as a better alternative platform and UNIX as a platform they don’t want to resurge on the desktop. The lack of management tools, pull back of key vendors like Quark and an anticipated drop in market share below 2 percent in 2003 are obsolescing this platform. Apple’s continued technical disadvantage against Intel is expected to force them to adopt x86 technology by the end of 2003.

Of course the G5 processor gave Apple a new hope, with speeds expected to reach 3GHz or higher in 2004.

Best products of 2003

Here are my picks for the best products of 2003.

  • Power Mac G5. Apple's fastest computer ever and the first 64-bit desktop system.
  • Apple's new line of PowerBooks. These are among the best laptops Apple (or anyone else) has made. They introduced new technologies such as Airport Extreme & Bluetooth and are more rugged than the old TiBooks.
  • iTunes Music Store. Apple shook up the music industry with the first wildly successful legal music download service.
  • iLife. iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD gained many new features and are now fully integrated.
  • iChat AV & the iSight. Video conferencing made easy with the most convenient webcam ever.
  • Panther. The fastest Mac OS X yet, with new features like Expose to make your work easier.
  • Safari. Apple's own web browser. It may not be the fastest, but most users will find it easy & pleasant to use. It's a big improvement over IE.
  • Disclabel. The best CD labeling software. Disclabel is nicely integrated with iTunes and the other iLife applications and shares the same user interface design.
  • URL Manager Pro. The best bookmark management utility, finally available for Mac OS X.
  • ShapeShifter. The safest way to apply themes in Mac OS X. Unlike other appearance changing utilities, it doesn't modify the system.
  • SubEthaEdit. One of the most interesting products to take advantage of Rendezvous technology, it lets many people share and collaborate on documents.

Share your thoughts here and let us know what your favorites are.

My 2004 predictions and a look back

Here are my predictions for 2004, with a look back at my predictions for this year.

Steve Jobs called 2003 the "year of the laptop", but that was only part of the story. The biggest stories of 2003 were the G5, Panther, iTunes Music store, and the new line of PowerBooks & iBooks. In all, this was one of Apple's most successful years ever, driven by the remarkable success of the iPod and the iTunes Music Store. This year also marked the death of the G3, when Apple introduced G4 based iBooks.

Let's go through my predictions for 2003 and see how we did.

  • 1 GHz iMacs at 17" and 19". We actually saw 1.25 GHz iMacs with 20" screens.
  • iBooks, most likely based on the 'GOBI' G3 rather than G4 We did see G4 based iBooks as well as the popular 12" PowerBook G4.
  • smaller desktop system to replace the aging minitower. No. The G5 is one of Apple's biggest towers.
  • High end systems and XServes will use IBM's 970 CPU. Apple introduced the G5, but XServes are still based on G4s.
  • iPods will gain more PDA functionality & wireless connectivity. No, although the iPod did become a lot more powerful & flexible.
  • Quark XPress will finally be released for Mac OS X. Yes, this was a no-brainer.
  • MacOS X 10.3 will be released Another no-brainer, although it doesn't include the seamless data sharing features I predicted. iTunes playlist sharing was released in a separate update. Apple did release their own web browser, but it isn't based on Camino.

I didn't predict the iTunes Music Store and the revolution in legal music downloads it triggered. Among the new technologies Apple introduced were Bluetooth, Airport Extreme, FireWire 800, and USB 2.0.

So, here are my predictions for 2004:

  • G5 based XServes. It makes sense that a high-end server would get the most powerful processor available.
  • A limited edition system, perhaps a colored iMac or a new Cube, to mark the 20th anniversary of the Macintosh.
  • A small, inexpensive, limited capacity iPod, probably around $100-200.
  • Faster G5s, possibly reaching 3 GHz at MacWorld Expo, pushing 4 GHz by the end of the year.
  • A major iLife update. iTunes may get a broadcasting feature that will allow others to listen live, in addition to playlist sharing.
  • A redesign of the iMac, possibly a headless iMac.
  • Wireless connectivity for the iPod, either Bluetooth or Airport Extreme.
  • MacOS X 10.4 will be released late in the year. We'll most likely see "Home on an iPod", which was rumored for 10.3. This will let you keep your home directory on an iPod or external drive. We'll also see some improved data sync features for people who use both laptops & desktop systems.

Silent Night fixes 12'' PowerBook fan noise

iDriveX has written a utility to fix the problem with excessive fan noise caused by the Mac OS X 10.3.2 update on 12" PowerBook G4s.

Silent Night can be downloaded here.

Before the 10.3.2 update, the fans would come on when the topside CPU temperature reached 148 degrees F and they would turn off after the fans had cooled the system down to 138 degrees F. After the update, the fans come on at 125 degrees F, and turn off after cooling the system down to around 116 degrees F.

The 12" PowerBook Rev. A operates at around 125-130 degrees F with normal tasks (browsing the web, ichatting, and checking your e-mail), which causes the fan to run continuously.

This installer replaces the AppleADM103x.kext and the AppleADT746x.kext with previous versions that keep the fan at its original settings. This installer has only been tested with a PowerBook Rev. A and there have been no known side effects.

I tried it on my own PowerBook and it does solve the fan noise problem, although I did have to zap the PRAM after installing it as the release note suggests.

Camino 0.8 Roadmap

Mike Pinkerton has announced a roadmap for Camino 0.8, which he hopes to release in March.

We have several key goals for this release:

  • as fast, as stable, and as polished as Camino 0.7, if not more so
  • rock solid release for 10.1.x users
  • public release of features baking in nightly builds
  • take advantage of fixes/improvements in Gecko since Mozilla 1.0

I'm shooting for a March release of Camino 0.8. That date may change depending on our ability to fix crashers and when Mozilla1.7 goes final. As our primary goal is stability, we need to make sure that Gecko is not changing/regressing under us while we're stabilizing the release. When the time is right (about Mozilla1.7), we will cut our own branch of mozilla and use that instead of the trunk. Mozilla1.7 should be out in the March timeframe, about the same time as Firebird 1.0. Having both products focused on that branch will help drive Gecko's stability.

10.3.2 Upgrade problems on 12'' PowerBook G4

As reported in Mac Net Journal and on Apple's discussion forums, the Mac OS X 10.3.2 upgrade may cause the the fan to run continuously on original (867 MHz) 12" PowerBook G4s when the computer is running on AC Power.

I've noticed the problem on my own PowerBook. While the fan noise is annoying, the machine does run a lot cooler. I also found that the Battery Update definitely improves the battery time by at least 30 minutes on my 12" PowerBook.

Mail vs. Entourage

A current article at MacSlash compares Mail.app with Entourage, and Geekable.com calls Mail.app a "crappy toy". Here's why Mail.app has been my choice since 10.2.

Although I own MS Office, I always find myself going back to Mail. My biggest dislike with Entourage is that it uses a proprietary database format and its mail databases are huge. I've had Entourage's database get corrupted on several occasions, but thankfully I've always managed to recover it. Mail.app, on the other hand, uses standard Unix MBOX files.

Mail also has the best spam filtering I've seen. I find that it almost never falsely identifies legitimate email as spam, and when it misses a piece of spam, it will learn when I mark it as junk.

The best thing about Mail is its integration with other applications such as the addressbook & iChat. Although Entourage has its own address book & calendar, I prefer using Addressbook & iCal since I can synchronize them with my phone, iPod, Handspring Visor, as well as between my Macs using iSync.

Mail.app also handles multiple addresses better than any other email program. With everything else, you need to create a separate account for each email address, which can be a pain if you have several different addresses forwarded to a single mailbox. With Mail, you simply list all of the addresses associated with the account separated by commas.

The one drawback of mail is that it slows down when there are a lot of messages in a mailbox. For a while I was using Eudora to archive my email, but I'm now using a local IMAP server to store my email when I move it off my mail account.

SoftIntegration C++ Graphical Library (SIGL) 1.1 released

DAVIS, Calif., December 11, 2003 - SoftIntegration, Inc., the leader of
scripting technology for ubiquitous computing, today announced the release
of cross platform SoftIntegration C++ Graphical Library (SIGL) 1.1.

SoftIntegration Graphical Library (SIGL) is the simplest solution for 2D/3D
graphical plotting within the framework of C/C++. Plots can be generated
using SIGL for display in a local monitor, through the Web, or saved in a
file with a variety of different file formats.

SIGL 1.1 adds new features for royalty free distribution of applications
developed with SIGL.

SIGL meets the demand for an easy-to-use cross platform C++ graphical
application. It contains a plotting class with many member functions for
visualization. It simplifies the graphical plotting for C++ users. You can
compile and link your code with the Graphical Library in your desired C++
compiler. All functions in SIGL are supported in Ch, an embeddable C/C++
interpreter. The same graphical application can be either compiled in C++ or
run from Ch directly without compilation.

The graphical library is for applications where the convenience of use,
speed and performance matter. With SIGL, you can design and deploy the
graphical application running across different platforms. There is no royalty
for distribution of your compiled code linked with SIGL. SIGL can save you
from significant development and maintenance cost.

SoftIntegration Graphical Library is available for Windows, Solaris, Linux,
HP-UX, and Mac OS X. It requires XDarwin with the OroborOSX window manager in
Mac OS X. SIGL starts at only $299 for a single-user license. Education
discount is available.

New iChat website !

iChat was the missing iApp of Mac OS X, and videoconference
the missing feature of iChat.

When this appeared, it made a new user-group like there are for each apps.

And every users-group need a website dedicated to its app.

iCM was created in this goal about a year ago.

iChat's and iCM's followers being more and more numerous, it was time to react.

Thus, Flash interface has been abandoned for the power and accessibility of
PHP with PostNuke.

iCM is now in version 3.0 with a new URL : iChatMasters.net

We still can find Forums, development projects, rooms list (over 170) and tips.

And here are the great new features :

- Friend Finder a Users Directory with complete
Profiles and powerful searches

- iChatMeeting a ring by all the iChat meeting
sites for a single room

- Daily news

- Downloads Directory

- Help files

- Links directory

- Search engine
The whole site is made by a voluntary and is free for visitors as for Members.

Thx, bye

Virtually yours,

Zer0ne

If you're in the market for a new Apple product this holiday season, you
may want to check out ColorWare, Inc.(www.colorwarepc.com), a leader in
colored computer products.

As a result of an increase in demand for colored computers, ColorWare has
found that loyal Apple customers are asking for an alternative to the
standard white and silver products currently offered by Apple; Colorware
offers Apple products in 24 different colors. The cost for the Apple
coloring service is $49.00 for the iPod, and $399.00 for the iBook G4 or
PowerBook G4.

"I am picky about quality of work, and I'm willing to pay for it," said
Yoshi DeHerrera of Tech TV. "ColorWare gets the Yoshi seal of approval."

Since 1999, ColorWare has been the company that other computer
manufacturers turn to when looking to increase sales of their
products. Colorware is able to custom color almost any product. You can
send them 10 or 10,000 products to color; there is no quantity
limitation. With their patented color process, which is a hybrid between
the manufacturing and automotive painting industry, Colorware is able to
color any type of surfaces, including plastics and medals.

In November of 2002, ColorWare introduced their first line of retail
products that customers can purchase off their website, including a Dell
desktop computer in the standard 24 colors. Now ColorWare has
introduced their own line of gaming computers, which include desktops and
laptops called SHARK.

Chandler 0.2 released

The Open Source Applications Foundation (OSAF) has released Chandler 0.2, their personal information manager (PIM).

Chandler is being designed as a cross-platform open source alternative to Microsoft Outlook, with much of the development being done in Mac OS X.

Chandler 0.2 is an architectural release, focused on platform and infrastructure, designing and testing out compelling innovative capabilities, to put in place a modular architecture and provide basic elements of end-user applications to validate the platform.

The 0.2 release of Chandler is still very skeletal in functionality, with very few obvious differences to the end-user from the 0.1 release. However, there are some major changes in the underlying framework and architecture.

The platform is finally beginning to be interesting for open source developers to start contributing and writing code. OSAF invites constructive feedback and critcisms about the design and architecture, especially in the areas of Data model & repository, Notification Framework, and Agent Framework.

More information about Chandler 0.2 is available here. Chandler 0.2 can be downloaded for Linux, Mac OS X, or Windows here.

ChronoSync updated to version 2.0

Econ Technologies updates ChronoSync to version 2.0.
ChronoSync, the automated synchronization and backup application for Mac® OS
X, gets mounting, rules, analysis, notification, scheduling, and speed
improvements. ChronoSync is flexible enough to handle the simplest to the
most complex synchronizations. Go to www.econtechnologies.com to download
the demo and try it. Buy ChronoSync before December 15, 2003 for a special
price of $20. This saves you $10 off the regular price of $30!

ChronoSync gives complete control over all your synchronizations. It can now
automatically mount and unmount a wide variety of volumes, including
external hard drives, removable media or computers running OS X, OS 9,
Windows, Unix, or Linux. Schedule your sync to run at anytime or when a
volume is mounted and ChronoSync will store your ID and password within the
sync document so the entire process is automated.

ChronoSync adds even more to its scheduling options. Schedule syncs to run
on the minute or schedule it to sync upon mounting so that data is
automatically synchronized immediately when a target becomes available. New
email notification sends sync logs after completion making it possible to
monitor results from anywhere. Group multiple sync documents inside
container documents to schedule several syncs at once. Additionally, pre-
and post-synchronization AppleScripts can be specified to handle any
synchronization scenario.

ChronoSync makes it even easier to examine all your data. New features for
the Analyze Panel include the ability to open files directly, view package
file contents, and visually identify the status of any two files. Custom
actions like exclude and force direction can be performed directly from the
Trial Synchronize window. Additional options for handling file conflicts
during synchronization have also been added.

New additions to the Rules panel make complex backup strategies easy. A new
Finder Label rule allows inclusion or exclusion of files and folders based
on their labels. String together any number of rules using "and/or" logic.
Combine and prioritize rules inside nested rule groups to ensure rules are
evaluated in the correct order.

A redesigned analysis engine for faster scanning of targets combined with a
refined copying algorithm results in speedier overall performance over
previous versions of ChronoSync. Even with all of the options available in
ChronoSync, the best part remains its easy to use interface making it the
perfect synchronization and backup product for Jaguar and Panther.

ChronoSync was updated to version 2.0 and sells for $30 but, until December
15, 2003, will be specially priced at $20. Read the release notes for a
complete list of features and fixes.

Unsanity Releases ShapeShifter 1.0.1

Unsanity LLC announces the release of ShapeShifter 1.0.1. ShapeShifter allows users to easily and safely customize their Mac using themes. This update brings many fixes and enhancements.

Product Description:

ShapeShifter is a revolutionary new product that lets you change the overall appearance of your Mac using 'themes'. We're not talking about just desktop backgrounds and icons here, we're talking about everything - the look of windows, menus, buttons, absolutely everything. You don't wear the same clothes everyday, your house doesn't look exactly like your neighbor's - why should the computing interface you use everyday be any different. You personalize your physical workspace to suit your tastes and whims, so why not your Mac?

New in version 1.0.1

  • Resolved an issue that could prevent systems using non-English and multi-byte localizations (Japenese, for example) from being able to use ShapeShifter.
  • Resolved issues that could cause application instability in Panther when using themes created for earlier operating systems.
  • Resolved an issue that caused fuzzy Menu Extras, slow window resizing performance, redrawing issues in Safari, and incorrect window transparency in some applications for users running Panther.
  • Added a "Default Aqua Theme" item to the theme list.
  • Added compatibility for "dlta" themes created for OS X versions earlier than 10.2.
  • ShapeShifter now has the ability to download simple updating instructions from Unsanity's servers when new OS versions are released.
  • General performance improvements.
  • Now uses a larger font in the theme selection view.
  • Added useful error messages to the prefpane indicating why ShapeShifter can't be used on a particular machine.
  • Fixed a large memory leak related to drawing metal windows. This leak could have resulted in reduced system performance.
  • Resolved issues that could prevent removing themes from the ShapeShifter preference pane from succeeding.
  • Added Japanese localization courtesy of Akira Ikeda.
  • The preference pane now displays the notice that the demo version has expired in red text to avoid confusion.
  • Pieces of the currently-installed theme are no longer mixed in with a theme preview.
  • Metal windows are no longer modified when ShapeShifter is active but there is no installed theme.
  • The preference pane no longer allows themes to be installed after the demo has expired. This should reduce confusion.
  • Added ShapeShifterCacheManager to the APE's exclude list. This should reduce spurious error messages to Console and may fix the occasional issue that results in the Cache Manager getting hosed.

VVI Adds 3D Graphs And Updates To Mac OS X 10.3

VVI today announced version 9.0.10 of its Vvidget graphing system. John Brilhart, Chief Technical Officer of VVI, made this statement:

"Vvidget Pro is the most advanced and powerful reporting and data
visualization system available. The newest release adds three
dimensional surface and scatter plots with features such as real-time
3D rotation, surface normal shading and depth queuing, printing, PDF
exporting and drag and drop to text editors, mail and other
applications. All available in a breathtaking and powerful GUI layout
application, a high-transaction report server, data-oriented wizard
interfaces, Interface Builder drag and drop palette, and a
cream-of-the-crop programming API and framework design. When Bud
Tribble, now V.P. of Software Technology at Apple, saw it he said it
was the most exciting piece of software of its kind that he had seen.

Customers use Vvidget Pro to display data from Oracle database servers,
Reuters stock feeds, National Instruments DAQ cards, and a wide range
of other sources both commercial and proprietary. For example, Vvidget
Pro has been used by customers to control laboratory instruments and
display results in real time, monitoring batch chemical processes with
data acquired from multiple sensors, display all the trades on an
entire stock exchange, such as the NYSE, in real time as they happen
and report on financial portfolios. Those are just a few ways customers
take advantage of Vvidget Pro.

VVI made the first graphing application for Mac OS X, Apple shipped it
with Mac OS X's predecessor, Rhapsody operating system, and our
reporting software and systems are based on over a decade of innovative
software design and customer use studies and is continually improved.
It is designed with a component architecture so very specific layouts
and formats can be assembled and integrated into customer's operations
which provides results that look and perform better than others, which
is, after all, why they want Vvidget Pro. It also comes with a
significant number of pre-assembled form, report, chart and graph types
available through the programming API and through the various end user
tools."
