Silent Night fixes 12'' PowerBook fan noise

iDriveX has written a utility to fix the problem with excessive fan noise caused by the Mac OS X 10.3.2 update on 12" PowerBook G4s.

Silent Night can be downloaded here.

Before the 10.3.2 update, the fans would come on when the topside CPU temperature reached 148 degrees F and they would turn off after the fans had cooled the system down to 138 degrees F. After the update, the fans come on at 125 degrees F, and turn off after cooling the system down to around 116 degrees F.

The 12" PowerBook Rev. A operates at around 125-130 degrees F with normal tasks (browsing the web, ichatting, and checking your e-mail), which causes the fan to run continuously.

This installer replaces the AppleADM103x.kext and the AppleADT746x.kext with previous versions that keep the fan at its original settings. This installer has only been tested with a PowerBook Rev. A and there have been no known side effects.

I tried it on my own PowerBook and it does solve the fan noise problem, although I did have to zap the PRAM after installing it as the release note suggests.
