Longhorn's ''task based'' user interface

In this Longhorn FAQ, Paul Thurrott touts Longhorn's "task based" user interface as superior to traditional desktop user interfaces. I'm sure there are better user interfaces, but I doubt of this is it. For anyone who thinks a task based user interface is a good idea, I offer two words:

Adobe PhotoDeluxe

Remember it? A simplified & dumbed-down version of PhotoShop which offered several pre-defined tasks. Just try to do anything that didn't fit one of those tasks. Most users ended up switching to the more flexible PhotoShop Elements or even the full version of PhotoShop.

When the user interface offers a set of pre-defined tasks, it forces you to try to shoehorn whatever you want to do into one of those tasks, which may not necessarily be a good fit. It may help beginners learn how to do a few common tasks with the system, but it prevents them from exploring and actually learning how to use it and doesn't help them think for themselves about how to apply it to other work.

I'm sure there's something better than the desktop user interface, but it needs to be something that actually helps users of all levels rather than just allowing beginners to get some work done. I'm sure Longhorn also offers an expert mode, which most users will switch to after they get tired of the hand-holding, but chances are it will be yet another variation of the desktop interface.

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA -- November 25, 2003 -- Lava Software is now shipping PC-Mac-Net FileShare v3.0, a product which allows users to share files, such as family movies and photo collections, easily and securely between computers connected over the Internet. Versions are available for Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP, MacOS X and MacOS Classic. A Linux version is coming in early 2004.

If a download is broken for any reason (such as a modem dropout), it can be resumed from where it left off, allowing users to reliably transfer large files such as digital movies.

Lava Software is currently offering two licenses for the price of one - for every license you order, you get an extra one free. The Standard Edition is priced at USD24.95 per license, and purchasers get full download access to all platform versions.

This special offer makes PC-Mac-Net FileShare perfect for families over the holiday season, as purchasers can give the free license to another family member located anywhere in the world as a gift and then share movies, photos and other files with them.

Fink 0.6.2 released

The latest Fink release, version 0.6.2, is now available
for both source and binary users. This is a bug-fix release, intended
to address two problems: the dselect/user deletion bug, and a
problem with ownership of files.

The dselect bug was addressed by
updating the fink, dpkg, and apt packages. After updating to 0.6.2,
it is safe to once again use dselect. However, if you ran dselect
at any time since 0.6.0, you should carefully check the integrity
of the file at /sw/etc/apt/sources.list. If you have
any doubts about this file, you should replace it with
the default sources.list file.

Users who have installed binary files from the 0.6.1 distribution
may find that certain files in their Fink installation are owned
by UID 2011 rather than by root. To correct this problem,
run the command:

   sudo find /sw/ -user 2011 -exec chown root:admin {} ;

This release, like the previous one, was built on OS X 10.2
using the gcc 3.3 compiler, and runs fine with some exceptions on OS X 10.3. Most Fink
users who upgrade to 10.3 will continue to
want to only use the binaries from this
new distribution for now, while the Fink team continues to modify
Fink packages for 10.3.

40GB iPod

I recently traded in my old 10GB iPod at PowerMax for a new 40GB model and it's definitely a big improvement. Besides having 4 times the amount of disk space, the new iPod software has many significant enhancements.

My favorite feature of iPod 2.x software is the new on-the-go playlist. You can build a playlist by selecting tracks while browsing. However, when you sync the iPod to a computer, the on-the-go playlist gets cleared, although with iTunes 4.1 it will be added to iTunes as a new playlist before being cleared.

The new software also adds a notes feature & several new games. The note feature is actually a limited HTML viewer - notes can contain some markup and can even be linked. Someone at MacHack even wrote an adventure game using linked notes.

You can now customize the iPod's menus by adding commonly used items such as brows artists to the top level menu. Among the new games, the most interesting is Music Quiz, which plays a piece of a song for you to identify.

With 40GB of space, the iPod also makes a great storage device for backing up your important documents, even if your music library won't fill it.

The third generation iPods are a significant upgrade to early models. I highly recommend the new model. If you have old hardware, such as a car power adapter, Dr. Bott's PocketDock will let you use most devices that have a standard FireWire connector with the new iPod's dock connection.

Contour Showcase

The Contour Showcase is a sleek protective case for third generation iPods. Made of clear plastic & rubber, the Showcase is attractive and offers excellent protection. A sturdy latch provides easy access to the iPod and a removable belt clip makes it easy to take with you.

My 40GB iPod fits perfectly (a rubber insert is provided for 10GB iPods) and the appearance complements the iPod nicely. The latch is easy to operate but won't open accidentally and openings provide access to all of the iPod's buttons & cables. The iPod won't fit in a dock with the Showcase, but the docking cable can still be used alone.

I took it to the gym a few times and found that it offers excellent protection & is easy and comfortable to carry. I highly recommend it. The only drawback is that you can't use the dock with it, but you can still use a docking cable. I'm not aware of any iPod cases that will let you use the dock and still offer good protection, however.

National Geographic Brings Mapping Back To Mac OS X

Are you a outdoor explorer, adventure junkie, avid travelier of the country, or even spend your day building constructing towers in the outdoors. Until recently I have kept a windows based laptop sitting in my closit to use during my roadtrips and outdoor adventures. After the release of Mac OS X the macintosh community was left with out mapping software to use natively. For those macintosh users who depended on mapping software for there jobs or daily lives where forced to either stay off the band wagon or joing the devil in using Windows XP . Now things have changed.

Mapping software has always been something mac users of the world have been missing, even back in the days of Mac OS 9, the best thing mac users could get there hands on was Street Atlas 6.0 by DeLorme. Consumers looking for a mapping application that was ability to supply topographical information where forced to either use Virtual PC, buy a PC, or resort to buying paper topographical maps at $10.00 each from the USGS.

PC users had a number of products to pick from including the very popular Topo USA from DeLorme. Topo USA retails for $99.95 and includes 7 CD-ROMs .

On November 3rd, National Geographic brought the macintosh community back into the mapping world and now for the first time have even brought topographical mapping to the macintosh community. TOPO! by National Geographic may not have all the features of the DeLorme Topo USA, the detailed content more then makes up for it. While Topo USA by DeLorme contains 7 cds, TOPO! from National Geographic full set includes over 240 cds of topographical information. TOPO! is sold in state packages with a total of 10 cds in each package. Each TOPO! state package retails at a suggested retail price of $99.95. Members of the macintosh community who live in Mid-Atlantic (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia,& Washington DC) or North East (Connecticut, Maine,

Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, & Vermont) can purchase the entire section for the cost of a single state.

Planning a trip to a state park for the weekend but don't want to buy the package for the entire state of your trip. National Geographic has expansion packs that include all the national parks of the United States. National Parks expansion packs can be purchased for $29.99 per region or the entire country for $49.95.

Not visiting a national park but still want to get your hands on trail maps. National Geographic hosts mapXchange, mapXchange provides free files for use with TOPO! CD-ROMs, you can even post your own files so that others can use them on their own adventures. For all you really big Apple geeks we will soon be posting a map file including all the Apple Retail Stores in the country including pictures from the opening day of each store.

Features

1: Elevation Profiles for routes

2: Topographical mapping with custom routes and markers

3: Expanded view window

4: Alternate view window

5: Bookmark Folder Structure

6: Profiles for waypoints, bookmarks, and routes including embedded photos, websites, and attached files.

7: Five different detail levels

The one thing still missing to mac users is the ability to have up to date street maps. National Geographic has also started the process of filling this need for mac users. Recently Back Roads Explorer was released for PC users including 17 cds packed with street information. This application has been designed to seamless with TOPO!, Although this package is not yet available for the Macintosh version of TOPO! sources at National Geographic has stated that "National Geographic is dedicated to providing members of the macintosh community with quality mapping applications and are working to provide their entire TOPO! product line to macintosh users." In addition to Back Roads Explorer, Pocket TOPO! for the Mac version of TOPO! is expected to be released in the near future.

TIPS & TRICKS

When you make custom markers on your maps you are given a prebuilt set of icons you can use for your marker. The files that control these images are found at /TOPO!/TPO_DATA/ under the following names: Arrows.bmp, Recreation.bmp, & Shapes.bmp by editing these files with a image editor you can add new images to use as your markers.

If you already own a copy of TOPO! for PC you can use your data cds from these packages with the mac version.

If you do not want to carry around all our cds to use with TOPO! you can copy the entire folder from the data cds to your TOPO! directory at the following path /TOPO!/TPO_DATA/, this will allow you to access the data from the cds with out having the CD in your drive. If you own multiple states you may consider installing the application on a firewire drive so you can store all the data for use with the application.

Desktop Assistant Update Announced

Write Track Media Releases Desktop Assistant Maintenance Update

MILFORD, Pennsylvania – October 28, 2003 – Write Track Media announced the immediate release of a maintenance update to their popular personal automation toolkit – Desktop Assistant.

Desktop Assistant is an application for MacOS X that is designed to assist users in a variety of different ways. Its primary functions are to assist users when accessing databases, performing complex database searches, navigating or routing files to favorite server locations, as well as containing quick access to any number of AppleScript tools. Desktop Assistant is the ultimate toolkit that can be customized and expanded to better suit your individual needs. It ships with over 25 Finder and Clipboard Text Manipulation tools that perform over 40 functions and includes over 50 pages of instructions (in Acrobat PDF documents). It requires no knowledge of programming to use any of its built in features and tools and it will run on any Macintosh computer with Mac OS 10.2.6 (or higher) installed.

The upgrade (version 1.0.2) is available immediately for download now as a demo – and is free of charge for anyone who already owns a license. In addition to fixing a few minor bugs, this update primarily focuses on adding several new features including:

Have a Server Party - All the database features have been extended to allow access to more than one FileMaker Pro server. This highly requested feature is perfect for network administrators managing multiple servers or for users who need to launch and perform searches in databases located on various servers. Also, consultants will love the ability to link to both their own and their client's databases through the internet.

Client Preference - All the database featrues can work with FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Pro Developer and – for those who do not use or own FileMaker – the database features can be disabled. This allows greater flexibility for everyone, especially database developers. When you first launch the new version, it prompts you to make your initial selection of client software. After that, a simple change of preferences is all it takes to switch!

Custom Tools Allowed - While plans are still in place for the eventual release of a developer kit allowing AppleScript programmers to create modules that are tightly integrated with Desktop Assistant, a new feature in this update allows you to add your own scripts right now. While your scripts can't yet tap into the internal code libraries and advanced features, this change allows you to group all your scripts under one simple interface.

Better Memory Skills - Your last menu choice from every category is now retained even after restarting the program. This includes the last: database for each server, tool for each category, and location alias for each category.

Panther Compatible - Desktop Assistant has been fully tested and can run on Mac OS 10.3.

Extended Sale - Due to the popularity of Desktop Assistant, the special introductory price of $29.50 has been extended through the end of the year.

New Xcode Plug-in Makes Reusing Code Easy

Write Track Media Releases a Plug-In for Xcode to Increase Efficiency.

MILFORD, Pennsylvania – November 10, 2003 – Write Track Media announced the immediate release of a new plug-in for Apple's Development Tools. Xcode Clippings Menu is a plug-in for Xcode, the core component of Apple's new developer tools for OS X. The plug-in adds a new "Clippings" menu to Xcode allowing developers to quickly gain access to snippets of code and other text resources directly from the Xcode menu bar. The "clippings" are text files that are stored in any number of subfolders within a primary clippings folder. Each subfolder within the primary folder becomes a menu item in the menu which, when selected, offers the user the ability to select one or more items for insertion into the front source document.

A demo of the product is available now on the company web site. The demo limits a user to 5 folders and 5 clippings per folder. Write Track Media is selling registration codes for the plug-in for just $10.

Benefits of Xcode Clippings Menu

Recycling Code Resources Wisely – Create a more efficient development workflow by reusing resources more effectively. Stop wasting time retyping the same text.

Get It Faster – Reusing text resources is fine, but if you have to travel elsewhere just to get the resources it takes time. Now you can add text in a source document much faster because the menu of selections is right there in Xcode! Create a script to export your database of subroutines and code snippets into a folder structure in the clipping folder. Spend more time coding and less time searching.

Reaping The Harvest – Don't regret losing track of the valuable code written in the past as your archives grow. The Xcode Clippings Menu Plug-In makes it less time consuming to save new code into your clippings folders. You can save the current selection from your source documents to a clipping file right from the "Clippings" menu. You can even save the text from the clipboard.

Easily Remodeled – Just choose "Reveal Clippings Folder" to quickly create, edit, delete, or to spring clean your text clippings.

Programming Languages Welcome – Since source code is text based – this resource works great with code documents of any kind. It works great with AppleScript Studio!

A Macintosh computer with Mac OS 10.3 (or higher) and Xcode is required to install and use the Xcode Clippings Menu. Xcode ships with Mac OS 10.3 and is available on Apple's website.

Editorial: the wrong MS Office alternative

Several months ago, I joined OpenOffice.org and downloaded the source, although I haven't done much with it. The more I use it, the less I like what I see. Here's why I think they're taking the wrong approach.

I've tried running the application itself (which currently runs under X11) and I find that I dread launching it. OOo is a huge application that loads the word processor, spreadsheet, and other modules when launched. It's even bigger, slower, and more bloated than MS Office.

OOo is written mostly in Java with a huge portability layer and lots of non-native widgets. On a 1GHz G4 it takes 8-10 hours to build. I haven't been able to build it successfully under Panther.

A successful office alternative needs to be lean, fast, and easy to use. It should be modular and easily extensible via scripting. It also needs to look & feel like a native application and should integrate & exchange data with other native applications. It should not be a huge monolithic application full of useless junk.

Important Fink news: User Deletion Bug/ Dselect Troubles

Quick Summary: If you're using an earlier version of Fink in 10.3, DO NOT USE DSELECT, and if you've used it, check your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file carefully.

Users who have bootstrapped or installed Fink 0.5.3 or Fink 0.6.0 on Mac OS X 10.3 could exhibit a problem where all users get deleted from the netinfo database, and you become unable to log in. The Fink team believes that this problem can only occur if you've used dselect.

If you are using Mac OS X 10.3, please be sure you're using the latest Fink version to avoid the issue. To make sure you don't have upgrade problems, check your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file. You will need to modify it if it contains deb lines that point to "release" or "current" without a version number. In other words, if your sources.list file contains these lines:

deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download release main

deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download current main

...you should change them to this:

deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download 10.3/release main

deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download 10.3/current main

The Fink team is working on updating the repository to make sure that even if you update you don't get the broken code, and to repair dselect, but in the meantime, make sure your sources.list file has the correct entries.

Other users have experienced problems with dselect itself, particularly complaints about a missing "darwin" package. If you are running dselect under 10.3 and you don't get this warning, then yoursources.list file is likely to be corrupted and you should repair it as above.

Stay informed of the latest Fink news at http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/.

    US downloads beat CD sales

According to BBC News, music fans in the US are buying almost twice as many singles in digital form over the internet as they are on CDs from stores.

Some 7.7 million tracks were bought and downloaded since the end of June - compared with four million CD singles sold, Billboard magazine reported.

The figures show the success of new legitimate music download services.

Legitimate download sites, such as Apple's iTunes, the newly relaunched Napster and Musicmatch, are the most popular. They are trying to tempt fans from unauthorised free download services like Kazaa and Morpheus, which have been blamed by the music industry for falling CD sales.

This proves my theory that the music industry is suffering from their own arrogance and lack of compelling products rather than widespread piracy. Given the chance, people will download music legally if the price is right rather than stealing music. People aren't going to go to a music store and pay almost $20 for a CD with one good song on it. Before legal downloads were widespread, people were stealing music because there was no other legal alternative.

New POS & Inventory Control Software for Mac OS X

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Dinari Systems LLC today announced the release of its XpertMart Point of Sale and Inventory Control software application for the Macintosh OS X platform.

XpertMart is a complete retail management system specifically designed for retailers of apparel, footwear, accessories and sporting goods. At the heart of XpertMart is a Style/Color/Size1/Size2 matrix used to input quantities into transactions such as Purchase Orders and to display stock levels, sales and other critical data.

“XpertMart gives retailers the tools they need to optimize their inventory for every size and color combination,” says Stephen Searfoss, President of Dinari Systems LLC. “Soft good retailers will live or die depending on their ability to keep in stock the sizes and colors customers want to buy.”

The release of XpertMart for Mac OS X is significant as for the first time retailers will have a broad range of POS peripherals to work with. XpertMart’s Macintosh edition has been certified to be compatible with such popular peripherals as Zebra barcode printers, Symbol barcode scanners, Epson POS printers and MagTek credit card readers among others.

For many years retailers wanting to run a Point of Sale system on their Mac were constrained by limited choices. One of the biggest limiting factors was the scarcity of POS peripherals that were compatible with the Macintosh.

“We are committed to serving the Macintosh market now and into the future,” says Searfoss. “Our technology makes us uniquely suited to adapt our software to each new upgrade in the Mac platform.”

XpertMart is developed entirely in Java and runs on any ODBC database including InterBase, Oracle, Informix, MySQL and others.

“We want to give our customers maximum flexibility to pick the database, platform and peripherals that are right for them,” says Searfoss.

A demo version of XpertMart for Mac OS X is available for immediate download at the website:
