Apple introduces G4 iBooks

Apple today introduced new G4 based iBooks, starting at $1099, making it the lowest priced G4 laptop ever.

The new iBook is available in 12" and 14" models.
The 12.1-inch iBook gives you a 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor, a 133MHz system bus and 256MB of DDR SDRAM. The 14.1-inch iBook packs a powerful punch with either a 933Mhz or 1GHz PowerPC G4 processor and 256K on-chip level 2 cache running at full processor speed, a 133MHz system bus and 256MB of DDR SDRAM. All models support expansion up to 640MB of RAM, and come with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics processor with 32MB of dedicated video memory and AGP 4X suppor.

Here's a handy comparison of the new 12" iBook and the 12" PowerBook G4:

iBook

  • 800MHz PowerPC G4
  • 256K L2 Cache
  • 256M RAM, expandable to 640M
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM
  • 30GB Ultra ATA drive
  • VGA, S-Video, and composite output (with adapter)
  • $1099

PowerBook G4

  • 1GHz PowerPC G4
  • 512K L2 cache
  • 256M RAM, expandable to 1.25GB
  • NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM
  • 40GB Ultra ATA/100 drive
  • DVI, VGA, S-Video, and composite output (with adapter)
  • $1599

I'm sure this will kill sales of the 12" PowerBook. Most people will probably opt for either the much less expensive iBook or the 15" PowerBook.
