Macromedia Central

Macromedia has released a preview of Macromedia Central, a Flash-based Sherlock-style environment.

Macromedia Central is a brand new way to develop, sell, and deploy applications using Macromedia Flash MX. More precisely, it is a different and exciting response to the need for “occasionally-connected” desktop and mobile applications.

As individuals and businesses rely more and more on web applications, there is a need to have access to these applications continually online and offline. Thus, a new type of application is starting to emerge, the occasionally-connected application. These applications typically run outside the browser environment, but detect when the user is online and connect directly to a web service or other source of dynamic data. The application can then run offline with the most up-to-date data.

Currently there isn’t a good platform or standard to develop and deploy these types of applications. For this reason, most occasionally-connected applications are either very simple, or very costly and proprietary. To make occasionally-connected applications easy to develop, sell, and deploy, a secure and well-established environment is needed.

Macromedia Central provides this ideal environment for rich, customized, occasionally-connected applications. It runs on both desktops and Macromedia Flash Player enabled mobile devices using the technology of the Macromedia Flash Player 6. Therefore, millions of users with the Macromedia Flash Player are ready to use Macromedia Central.

One feature of Macromedia Central is a system for distributing applications. The Macromedia Central environment is installed on the users machine on first use. Users are immediately able to download applications from developers to run in Macromedia Central. Application can be provided for free; however, developers will also be able to charge for their work.
