QuickTime Player for Windows Security Update

A potential vulnerability in Apple's QuickTime Player for Windows could
allow a remote attacker to compromise a target system. This exploit is
only possible if the attacker can convince a user to load a specially
crafted QuickTime URL. Upon successful exploitation, arbitrary code
can be executed under the privileges of the QuickTime user.

CVE Candidate ID: CAN-2003-0168

Versions affected: QuickTime Player versions 5.x and 6.0 for Windows.

QuickTime Player for Mac OS and Mac OS X are not affected.

Hydra 1.0: collaborative text editor

Hydra is a collaborative distributed text editor, combining the simplicity
of TextEdit and the power of Rendezvous. It allows to share documents on a
local network (with Rendezvous) or on the internet. Every participating
user can type simultaneously and see what others are typing. You can even
follow others users to see what they are up to.

The idea of collaborative editing is being researched for years, with
notable results. But now, for the first time it has been implemented in a
way you actually want to use. Using Mac OS X 10.2's unique Rendezvous
feature you don't have to edit long lists of preferences anymore,
configuring servers and clients. It's as easy as editing a local file, just
click the share button and type away.

Hydra features true simultaneous editing for multiple users. Text changes
are highlighted in a different color for each user, allowing easy
identification of your coeditors' changes. The scrollbar indicators give
you a quick overview where others are working in the document. The "follow"
mode even allows you to watch them typing. Hydra's Rendezvous browser shows
all shared documents in your local network, including name and picture of
the author.

In addition to its rich networking capablities, Hydra does everything you'd
expect from an advanced text editor. Encodings and line endings are handled
seamlessly. Programmers benefit from customizable syntax coloring and
function pop-up, bracket matching and indenting.

Share clipboards between Mac OS X computers

Did you ever wish you could copy & paste between two different computers? Erik Lagercrantz's ClipboardSharing finally lets you do it.

ClipboardSharing is a free application that allows you to send your clipboard between Mac OS X computers. You can use it to send almost anything that can be copied to a clipboard, including formatted text and images, and because it uses Rendezvous to find computers on the local network it is very simple and efficient to use.

With ClipboardSharing you can also restore previos clipboards, a simple way to get multiple clipboards. You choose how many recent clipboards you want the application remember, and then you can restore them by using a simple menu. It can save the clipboards to disk when it quits, so that the recent clipboards are available even after a reboot.

MacHack isn't moving

Spunky MacHack stays on Calendar Despite Apple WWDC Move

Dearborn, Michigan ≠ Where does a 600-pound gorilla sit? Anywhere it wants

is the punch line to that one.

What does a small, focused and vital programmers' conference do when

Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference suddenly reschedules to an adjacent

date?

MacHack, the Advanced Developers Hands-On Conference, keeps its date and

tries to make things work for all attendees.

Leadership and management of MacHack announced today that it was retaining

its traditional dates in the third week in June, and will meet June 19-21

as scheduled.

Ü"Speakers, sessions, travel plans, people have had arrangements in place

for months now," Dave Koziol, conference chairman said.Ü "Our dates may

make it difficult for some to attend both conferences, and we intend to

work with them to find ways for them to continue to participate. MacHack

offers many things to attendees beyond what they can learn at WWDC.ÜThere

is plenty of expertise in a lot of areas committed to a strong MacHack."

ÜMacHack organizers intend to continue offering attendees the unique

experience that the show has rendered to developers since the early days of

Macintosh success with System 3.2. The show continues to garner fierce

loyalty from its supporters.

ÜMiro Jurisic, a five-year attendee of the show, said "I wouldn't be who I

am today if it weren't for MacHack, and I don't want to lose that

opportunity to learn and interact. I would reschedule every other event in

order to attend MacHack."

MacHack traditionally consists of three days of intense sessions and

off-the-cuff development of innovative programs that are showcased at the

Friday night "Best Hack Contest."

ÜAvi Drissman, this year's MacHack Sessions chairman, said the experiences

at MacHack allow developers to truly reap the benefits of Apple hardware

and software, and give expert users a chance to go beyond customary

marketed capabilities of Apple products.

Ü"What Apple says at the Worldwide Developer Conference is all nice theory,

how things should work; what our sessions do is delve into how things _do_

work. Sessions like these provide the return on investment for companies

and individuals," Drissman said.

ÜTechnical papers formatted in academic style are also part of the MacHack

experience.Ü Each year, 10 or more formal papers give in depth looks at

current developer issues.Ü This year's papers already under development

include safeguarding use of commercial wireless networks, hacking

possibilities of Mac OS X, extending Palm OS 5, and building POSIX features

in a Mac way.

Scott Boyd, co-founder of The MacHax Group, and ringleader of the annual

Best Hack Contest, loves the creative chaos of the contest, and the

long-term friendships that result.

"Nowhere but MacHack can you sit down with and get to know such an amazing

array of experts who so freely share what they know," Boyd said. "There's

nothing like working with talented people to pull off a great hack!"

Past entries have ranged from the bizarre and twisted to the simply-useful.

Rendering the whole screen in ASCII in real-time, a shooting gallery of

icons during boot time, NetBunny, Pong in Open Firmware, and even Undo in

the Finder (back when that was unheard of).

"Collaboration in an environment where there's always somebody with the

right answer, mixed with a bit of caffeinated, sleep-deprived time

pressure, is a sure-fire way to make friends, cement working relationships,

and have a blast," said Boyd.

This year's MacHack will continue the proud tradition of wackiness and

intensity that attendees have praised since the early days of Juggler and

MultiFinder.

ÜUp to date information on the conference can be found at

http://www.machack.com.

PHP-Nuke happenings

A few interesting events occurred in the PHP Nuke community over the weekend while we were down.

PHP-Nuke 6.5 will be released to the public shortly, and I plan to upgrade MacMegasite to that version after I'm able to test it. One major enhancement in 6.5 is that the current forum system has been replaced with phpBB, which is a lot nicer.

The PHP-Nuke site was hacked a few days ago. Although the author fixed the security holes which allowed it to be hacked, his immediate overreaction was to announce that he plans to rewrite PHP-Nuke and make it closed source. Thankfully, the overwhelming negative response encouraged him to reconsider, and PHP-Nuke will remain open source.

As long as PHP Nuke remains open source, I will continue to use it at MacMegasite. However, in the event that he does decide to close it in the future, I will most likely switch to one of the open source variants such as PostNuke, or whatever branch the latest open source version takes.

Apple reschedules WWDC two days after MacHack

Apple today announced that it has rescheduled its 2003

Note that this is two days after the end of MacHack, which runs from June 19-21 in Dearborn, MI, which will make it very difficult for most people to attend both shows.

I've only been to one WWDC, when my employer paid for it, although I've been to two MacHacks and I plan to go this year. MacHack is a lot cheaper & more fun.

BounceWeb problems

As anyone who's visited today probably knows, BounceWeb was having problems with their SQL server for most of the day.

I've become fed up with their constant problems and I'm now looking for a new web hosting provider for both MacMegasite & WorldBeatPlanet. I've stayed with BounceWeb up to now because of their low price (hosting this site only costs me $5/month for 350M of space and 10G bandwidth (which is half the regular price as a "reward" for staying after their first big crash; they also gave me a free reseller account as another incentive). Even though it's cheaper than anyone else, I can't put up with their frequent down time any more.

Since I'm not making any money from MacMegasite or WorldBeatPlanet, cost is an issue for me.

If anyone can recommend a good web hosting provider, let me know.

XFree86 undergoing major changes

The XFree86 project, which has moved pretty slowly until now, is now undergoing a major shake-up.

XFree86 has setup a public forum for the open discussion of issues and concerns that people may have about the future of X, XFree86, and related technologies. More information about the mailing list & archives is available here.

Keith Packard has been removed from the XFree86 Core Team for "conduct that is not in the interests of the XFree86 Project". Specifically he has been privately seeking out support for a fork of XFree86 that he would lead, and has been privately working to form a closed committee of invited "vested interests" to address the concerns he has with XFree86.

Team member Alan Cox says:

"XFree86 is hard to get involved with usefully, resistant to cool ideas and strongly wedded to an occasional not rolling regular release model. ... X has to evolve, X has to do cool stuff, X has to let people break stuff, X has to delegate trust to driver maintainers far more. ... As a driver maintainer X is a painful project, not because of the code ... but because of the project structure and lack of delegation."

iPod Software 1.2.6 Update

iPod Software 1.2.6 provides improved battery management which solves a problem that may appear to shorten your iPodÃs battery life.

Some customers have reported that over time their iPodÃs battery life has declined. This update enables the iPod to more accurately monitor its battery charge, thus using the entire battery capacity and regaining long battery life. The result is longer playback time and extended standby time. After updating the iPod, customers can expect at least 10 days of standby battery life on a full charge.

Prior to this update, the iPod would sometimes mistake a temporary low voltage condition as an indication that the battery was discharged. This resulted in the iPod shutting down prematurely, even though the battery was still capable of powering the iPod.

The update is available from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/.

Bang & Olufsen releases MP3 player for Mac

Bang & Olufsen has responded to requests from Macintosh users and is making the companyÃs portable mp3 player compatible with AppleÃs iTunes.

BeoSound 2 is Bang & OlufsenÃs portable digital music player. It is a compact little device in stainless steel. It was launched in the spring and was then compatible only with Bang & OlufsenÃs own BeoPlayer and MicrosoftÃs Windows Media Player.

This triggered a flood of inquiries from disappointed Macintosh users who wanted to invest in the UFO-like player. So Bang & OlufsenÃs developers put on their thinking caps.

"We were surprised at the large number of inquiries we received from Macintosh users who wanted to buy a BeoSound 2," says Jens Victor Fischer, Product Manager at Bang & Olufsen, who continues:

"We had deliberately chosen not to develop BeoSound 2 to make it compatible with Macintosh computers because they account for such a small proportion of the total market, just 3.8%. However, the calculations we have done on the basis of all the inquiries we have received show that Macintosh users represent a larger customer segment for us than we first assumed."

With friendly assistance and guidance from Apple, Bang & OlufsenÃs developers immediately began to make BeoSound 2 compatible with AppleÃs own music player iTunes. And the first Macintosh-compatible BeoSound 2 players will be in the shops in December.

At the same time, it will be possible for those who already own a BeoSound 2 to download software from www.bang-olufsen.com that will enable it to work with iTunes.

"All in all, this has been a very positive experience. We cannot say much more than that Macintosh users have good taste. So now we are hoping for a flood of communications from Mac users who are satisfied with us," says Jens Victor Fischer with a smile.

More information about the BeoSound 2 is available here.

Safari's cookie bug fixed

Dave Hyatt reports: Maciej fixed the infamous cookie bug last night, so PHP-Nuke sites will now work properly. Quoting Maciej...

I have a fix for the infamous PHP-Nuke login bug. It should be in the next release. Here's the short version: the Netscape cookie spec says when a cookie comes from a URL like "http://www.foo.com/user.php" and no path is explicitly specified, then the path should default to "/user.php". However, it actually needs to default to "/", because that's what all real browsers do. Don't you love the web?

Security vulnerability in Samba

Apple is aware of the recently-announced security vulnerability in the

third-party Samba software (which provides Windows file sharing), and is preparing a software update to

incorporate the fix from the Samba team.

Samba is shipped with Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server, but is not enabled

by default. This means that most customers of Mac OS X and Mac OS X

Server are not affected.

For systems that have enabled Samba, we recommend reading the

information available from the Samba site http://www.samba.org/ and

taking the measures that are best for the particular system

environment.

The Apple software update will be available for Mac OS X 10.2.4 and Mac

OS X Server 10.2.4. Customers with earlier versions of Mac OS X who

make use of Samba are encouraged to either update to Mac OS X 10.2.4,

or to obtain Samba version 2.2.8 directly from the Samba site.

NetNewsWire 1.0.1 Ships

NetNewsWire, a RSS news reader & weblog editing tool, has been updated to version 1.0.1. This update fixes several bugs.

Several crashing bugs were fixed, in both the news reader and the weblog editor.

Better News Reader

Aside from crashing less, the news reader is now more forgiving of RSS feeds with errors. This means youÃll get fewer failed updates and more news.

One of the main user interface bugs has been an annoying œjumpiness” when reading a feed or group while itÃs being updated. This has been improved€but it can (and will) get better still in the future.

Another nasty bug has been with dates. Sometimes the date display wouldnÃt be particularly accurate. It would be off by weird intervals like 3 hours and 55 minutes. Fixed.

Better Weblog editor

The weblog editor crashes less!

Part of the reason it crashes less is because Ranchero stopped using the system-supplied XML-RPC code and wrote their own from scratch (which is available as open source, so other developers can use it too).

(XML-RPC, by the way, is how the weblog editor communicates with your weblog to post new and edited entries and so on.)

Some other bug fixes in the weblog editor include fixing a bug where the save as draft button wouldnÃt work for newly-created weblogs, and itÃs less naggy about asking you if you want to save changes (it was asking unnecessarily).

You will probably want to upgrade your plugin; the latest versions are:

  • Winamp: 0.99

After you've submitted 500 songs, you should see a "Similar Users" list at the

bottom of your Personal Stats page. This is the first step towards

facilitiating easy discovery of new music. You may find it useful to see what

other users with similar tastes to your own are listening to.

The developer is currently working on:

  • Algorithms for inferring similarity between users, songs and artists

  • General tidyness and speed of the website

  • A good way to get other developers involved in creating new features

  • A whole bunch of other stuff, including coursework involving lots of turtles

Mellel 1.5 multilingual word-processor adds numerous enhancements

A major update to the advanced word processor offers professional level tables, with all the options manageable from one small palette

RedleX have released Mellel 1.5, a major update to its advanced word-processor. The main new feature in this update (which is free for registered users of Mellel) is professional level tables. True to the original Macintosh spirit, all table options are concentrated in one easy to use palette. In addition, the new table tool offers numerous innovative options that make table creation easy and flexible.

New features in Mellel 1.5 (in detail)

  • Table creation and table palette: one palette to contain them all. All Mellel's table options are concentrated in one easy to use palette.

  • Table Border Selector: allows you to set the line, line width (weight) and colour for any or all cell borders and over any selected range of cells.

  • Table auto-adjustment: tables and table cells will shrink to fit into any given page size. That is, if you change the page size or page margins, the table will shrink to fit into the new page size.

  • Clear Delete policy: Deletion of cells and content (text or images) is clearly differentiated. Pressing the Delete key will clear the content in a selected range of cells. Selecting Delete Cells from the Options menu will delete the selected range of cells.

  • Text to Table: you can import or paste tab delimited text into a table from any text document, table in another word processor or spreadsheet

  • Tables in headers and footers: you you can insert a table in a header or a footer (and change the table with every page).

  • Tables in footnotes and endnotes: you can insert a table in footnotes and endnotes. You can additionally create a footnote or endnote reference from within a table.

  • Vertical alignment: allows you to set the vertical alignment in cells to the top, centre, bottom or justify (vertical block).

  • Diagonal lines: allows you to set a diagonal line for a single cell or any range of cells.

  • Cell padding: allows you to set the padding for a single cell or any range of cells (default is 2 pts). You can also manually adjust padding by changing text margins in cells down to 0.01 points.

  • Multi-page tables: can extend over an unlimited number of pages, with automatic table breaks over page margins.

  • Equalise width: allows you to equalise the width of columns in any selected range of cells.

  • Background colour: you can set the background colour for a single cell or any range of selected cells.

  • Cell merging and splitting: you can merge and split horizontally and vertically any range of selectable cells.

  • Adding and deleting rows, columns and cells: you can add and delete any selected range of rows or columns. When you add columns all the other columns will shrink proportionally to accommodate the newly added column.

  • Styles in palettes: you can use any paragraph or character style in a cell or apply them to a range of cells.

  • Table direction: table can have left to right or right to left direction, independently of the direction for text within the table.

  • Table dragging and resizing: columns, rows and entire tables can be dragged and resized, with dragging indication over the ruler to aid accurate positioning.

  • Accurate cell selection: cell selection is clear and accurate, so you always know which cells are selected (i.e., no "artifacts" and "additional selections" beyond what you actually selected).

  • Image insertion and manipulation: you can paste or drag and drop an image directly into a cell, between cells and between various parts of the document. Cells are automatically adjusted vertically to accommodate the image and images can be scaled and resized within cells.

And on the non-table department:

  • Smart Undo: typing sequences are grouped together. Headers, footers and footnotes/endnotes are no longer in separate undo context.

  • Smart Cursor: cursors change to arrows when hovering above a note reference or a note symbol. When over a text selection the cursor will change to an arrow (a-la-OS-9)

DEVONTHINK PERSONAL EDITION 1.5.1 AVAILABLE

DEVONtechnologies updates its revolutionary information manager and freeform database to version 1.5.1.

DEVONthink Personal Edition 1.5.1 features a new "Open externally" command to open selected contents in external viewers or editors, a Finder toolbar script to import the contents of the frontmost window into DEVONthink and introduces the ability to name knowledge bases (the Standard Edition of DEVONthink will allow to use more than one knowledge base). Also, the very handy Dock menu has been extended and the integrated help improved.

The many invisible changes include much faster display of PDF contents, faster saving of changes, and faster display of thumbnails due to a thumbnail cache. Additionally, the "Verify and repair" functions, the overall data security and the memory footprint have been improved.

Without the need for indexing, DEVONthink fully or semi-automatically classifies elements, lists similar contents and words immediately using fuzzy algorithms, finds and compares text and even images, summarises texts intelligently and provides high performance concordance tools. As a Cocoa application it's perfectly integrated into Mac OS X including it's own services for storing and summarising text clippings, has advanced text editing functions including rulers and provides a Finder-like interface with contextual menus, Dock menus, different views and drag-and-drop. Finally, DEVONthink is the first product based on the powerful and language independent DEVONtechnology which is suitable for a wide range of applications.

Open Source XML-RPC Class for Cocoa

Ranchero Software has released an open source XML-RPC class for Cocoa.

This is the same code used in NetNewsWire, which provides a way of calling remote procedures via HTTP and XML. See XML-RPC.Com for more information.

Why not use Apple's XML-RPC implementation?

At this writing (7 March 2003) the implementation of XML-RPC in Apple's WebServicesCore has a crashing bug. Whenever a method response contains an empty element, there's a crash.

Using this XML-RPC code has other benefits: it's Open Source, so you can see the code. As a set of Cocoa classes it's easier to use than a C API, and you can create sub-classes.

The source code including a sample application can be downloaded from http://ranchero.com/cocoa/xmlrpc/.

PowerBook G4 - 12

After using my new 12" PowerBook G4 as my primary computer for over two weeks I can say without reservation that this is the best Mac I've ever owned.

The 12" PowerBook G4 is smaller and lighter than my old iBook and the display is bright and easy to read. The keyboard is one of the best I've used on any laptop. It doesn't have the spongy feel of the iBook's keyboard. The machine feels very rugged and is very comfortable & easy to carry. The hinges are a lot smoother & quieter than the iBook.

The powerbook feels very snappy, running at 867 MHz with a 133 MHz system bus. I can usually get close to 3 hours of battery life running at full speed with the airport turned on and the screen at full brightness, compiling and debugging in ProjectBuilder without taking any steps to conserve power. I'm sure I would get at least another hour running at reduced speed with the airport card turned off doing less CPU-intensive work.

When I'm working at my desk, I use an external keyboard & monitor and external speakers with a subwoofer. In that case it feels exactly like a desktop system and is much faster than my old G4/500 AGP minitower.

CD burning is fast & reliable at 8X speed, and DVD playback is flawless. Although my system has a SuperDrive, I haven't attempted to burn a DVD yet.

Here are the XBench results, compared to my other systems:

  • 12" PowerBook G4: 60.62
  • G4/500 AGP Minitower: 46.06
  • iBook (Dual USB) 500 MHz: 28.59

For the first few days the charge indicator light would remain amber even though it was fully charged, but after running down the battery a few times to recalibrate it, I haven't seen it happen again.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the 12" PowerBook G4 does get pretty hot. The most intense heat is on the left side, especially at the rear & on the bottom of the case. It varies a lot with CPU activity, but I haven't found it too uncomfortable to use on my lap.

I highly recommend the 12" Powerbook. It offers the most bang for the buck and combines all of the features I loved about the iBook with the speed of a G4. I give it a rating of 9/10, taking off one point just because of the heat.

PC-Mac SecureJournal delivers secure document editing and daily journal

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA -- March 4, 2003 -- Lava Software is now shipping PC-Mac SecureJournal, a product containing a highly-secure document editor and password-protected diary/journal. It safeguards private notes, commercial information, academic papers, daily journal entries, etc. from other computer users, Spyware and Internet hackers using very strong 896-bit encryption. Even if the user's computer is compromised, information stored by PC-Mac SecureJournal can remain safe and secure.

PC-Mac SecureJournal also includes a unique master password recovery system, eliminating the serious problem faced by users if they ever forget their master password. If this occurs, the user simply activates the recovery system to gain access to their data by answering a series of customized questions they previously entered. From there, they can either refamiliarize themselves with their master password, or change it to something else. This ensures the user can always access their data, even after extended intervals between uses.

The diary/journal has an intuitive interface, with daily entries accessible directly via a monthly calendar display. All days with journal entries are clearly highlighted, assisting the user in keeping their journal up to date. When launched, PC-Mac SecureJournal also automatically opens the current day's journal entry, ready for input. The journal is sleek, fast and efficient, even with years of daily entries. It also features fast display lock-out, in case someone tries to read the user's text whilst they are editing.

The free demo software allows users to evaluate PC-Mac SecureJournal for an unlimited time, though some functions are limited. The full version is priced at USD24.95 per license. Purchasers get download access to the current version of the software for all platforms, as well as free upgrades for one year.

Versions are available for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP, MacOS X and MacOS Classic (from System 8.1 upwards, with PPC processor).

Apple Security Update 2003-03-03

Security Update 2003-03-03 is now available. It contains fixes for the

following potential security issues:

  • Sendmail: Fixes CAN-2002-1337 where a remote attacker could gain

elevated privileges on affected hosts. Sendmail is not enabled by

default on Mac OS X, so only those systems which have explictly enabled

sendmail are vulnerable. All customers of Mac OS X, however, are

    encouraged to apply this update.

  • OpenSSL: Fixes CAN-2003-0078, where it is theoretically possible for

a third-party to extract the original plaintext of encrypted messages

sent over the network. Security Update 2003-03-03 applies this fix for

Mac OS X 10.2.4, and customers of earlier Mac OS X versions may obtain

the patch from the OpenSSL web site:

    http://www.openssl.org/

Security Update 2003-03-03 may be obtained from:

  • Software Update pane in System Preferences

(updating from Mac OS X 10.1.5 and 10.2.4)

    - OR -

  • Apple's Software Downloads web site:

Updating from Mac OS X 10.2.4:

    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n120195

The download file is named: "1024SecUpd2003-03-03.dmg"

    Its SHA-1 digest is: 2eb722f340d4e57aa79bb5422b94d556888cbf38

Security Update 2003-03-03 for Mac OS X 10.1.5 is planned to be

available on March 4.
