Security Update 2002-03-24

Apple has released a new security update, available through the Software Update panel, which addresses problems with Samba & OpenSSL.

Security Update 2002-03-24 addresses a Samba vulnerability which could allow unauthorized remote access to the host system. The built-in Windows file sharing is based on the open source technology called Samba and is off by default in Mac OS X.

OpenSSL is also updated to address an issue in which RSA private keys can be compromised when communicating over LANs, Internet2/Abilene, and interprocess communication on local machine.

It is recommended that all users install this Security Update.

PHP-Nuke happenings

A few interesting events occurred in the PHP Nuke community over the weekend while we were down.

PHP-Nuke 6.5 will be released to the public shortly, and I plan to upgrade MacMegasite to that version after I'm able to test it. One major enhancement in 6.5 is that the current forum system has been replaced with phpBB, which is a lot nicer.

The PHP-Nuke site was hacked a few days ago. Although the author fixed the security holes which allowed it to be hacked, his immediate overreaction was to announce that he plans to rewrite PHP-Nuke and make it closed source. Thankfully, the overwhelming negative response encouraged him to reconsider, and PHP-Nuke will remain open source.

As long as PHP Nuke remains open source, I will continue to use it at MacMegasite. However, in the event that he does decide to close it in the future, I will most likely switch to one of the open source variants such as PostNuke, or whatever branch the latest open source version takes.
