REALbasic 5 released

REAL Software has released version 5 of REALbasic for Macintosh, their popular software development environment.

New features in REALbasic 5 include:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) features: Native Mac OS X Toolbars, Drawer window type, Brushed Metal appearance, Quartz rendering, modify dock icon appearance.

  • Internet support: server sockets, and support for protocols including HTTP, SSL, UDP, SMTP and POP3.

  • New runtime support for Mac OS X keychain, unicode, mouse scroll wheels, and multiple menu bars.

  • Development environment now supports mouse scroll wheels & unicode. Constant handling is improved and Sassafras KeyServer is supported for licensing control.

  • The all new compiler in REALbasic delivers many improvements to the REALbasic language including: more powerful arrays, FOR-NEXT loops, operator overloading, creating variables anywhere (not just at the beginning of the method) and single line IF statements.

  • The new debugger launches the test application as a separate application which provides both a safer, more stable development environment (free from memory corruption by an errant application) and a debugging experience that is more consistent with the final compiled application.

  • REALbasic now creates smaller applications on Mac OS X in most cases.

Upgrades are available starting at $30. For more information or to download a demo, visit http://realbasic.com/realbasic/index.html.
