First look at the 12'' PowerBook G4

My 12" PowerBook G4 arrived this morning. Here are some of my first impressions. I'll post a more detailed review & XBench results in the next few days.

I got my PowerBook from Apple's online store with a SuperDrive, 60G hard drive, 640M RAM, and an Airport Extreme card. This is a very nice machine, slightly smaller & lighter than my old iBook (Dual USB).

It feels very fast - a lot faster than my iBook and quite a bit faster than my G4/500 AGP Minitower. I did a build in ProjectBuilder, and it seemed to take about half as long as it did on the minitower.

The left side of the machine does get quite hot, but not uncomfortably so. I've been using it with an external keyboard & monitor and copying my files from an external FireWire drive.

I noticed the problem where the charge indicator light remained amber although it was fully charged. I unplugged it and ran it on batteries until it shut down to recalibrate, and I'm now charging it again. I'll report later whether that fixed the problem.

Here are the XBench results, compared to my other systems:

  • 12" PowerBook G4: 60.62

  • G4/500 AGP Minitower: 46.06

  • iBook (Dual USB) 500 MHz: 28.59

I've posted a photo gallery here.
