BitTorrent speeds downloads by using multiple servers

You have a great product, many customers, and are delivering your product to hordes of happy customers online. Serving large files creates problems of scaling, flash crowds, and reliability. As you grow, they become more central to your business, but your bandwidth costs go up as well. It's a vicious cycle.

BitTorrent is a simple software product which addresses all of these problems.

The key to cheap file distribution is to tap the unutilized upload capacity of your customers. It's free. Their contribution grows at the same rate as their demand, creating limitless scalability for a fixed cost.

The Mac OS X version of BitTorrent works with your web browser as a helper application. When you download a .torrent file, BitTorrent will use it to locate the actual file and download it from multiple servers. To insure that the file isn't corrupted and allow interrupted downloads to be resumed, BitTorrent does a SHA1 hash on all data and verifies the integrity of the completed download.

For more information, visit http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/index.html. The Mac OS X version can be downloaded here.

The open source project is also available from SourceForge.

Creative Commons Licenses

On 16 December, Creative Commons machine-readable licenses will be available to the public free of charge. Learn creative ways to distribute your works and find pointers to all sorts of licensed content you can use right away.

Creative Commons promotes the innovative reuse of all sorts of intellectual works. Our first project is to offer the public a set of copyright licenses free of charge.

These licenses will help you tell others that your works are free for copying and other uses -- but only on certain conditions.

You're probably familiar with the phrase, "All rights reserved," and the little (c) that goes along with it. Creative Commons wants to help copyright holders send a different message: "Some rights reserved."

For example, if you don't mind people copying and distributing your online image so long as they give you credit, we'll have a license that helps you say so. If you want people to copy your band's MP3 but don't want them to profit off it without your permission, use one of our licenses to express that preference.

New tools help port Windows code to Macintosh

Coderus Ltd and MicroAPL Ltd are pleased to announce that they are

collaborating to provide solutions for Games Developers who wish to move

games from Xbox or MS-Windows to Macintosh.

Games on Xbox or MS-Windows frequently make use of Microsoft's DirectX API

calls, and may also contain sections of code written in 80x86 assembly

language, both of which have previously been a bar to porting the code to

Macintosh.

Using the MacDX product from Coderus Ltd, developers can now readily move

code which uses the DirectX API to Macintosh. Most code which uses DirectX

can simply be recompiled and linked to the MacDX libraries.

If the source contains any 80x86 assembler code, developers can now use

MicroAPL's PortAsm/86 product which automatically translates the 80x86

assembler source, and rewrites it in native PowerPC assembler suitable for

running on the Macintosh. PortAsm's glue mechanism makes it easy to switch

between functions written in assembler and C.

Mark Thomas, CEO/Technical Director Coderus Ltd, said:

"Since we released MacDX, porting of titles has become a lot easier, but

there are always problematic areas which can delay a project. One such area

is optimized assembly function calls. Presently most developers have to

rewrite these functions by hand, which can be complex and time consuming.

We are very happy to be working with MicroAPL to make their PortAsm product

available to do this work automatically".

Simon Marsden, Technical Director of MicroAPL Ltd, added:

"The Macintosh has always lagged behind Windows in the number of games

titles available, but Coderus are doing an excellent job in helping redress

the balance. We are excited to be able to help promote the use of MacDX

technology by ensuring that PortAsm and MacDX work together".

For future information please visit the Coderus and MicroAPL websites:

Coderus Ltd was founded in 1998 and is based in Ipswich, England. It

provides unique solutions to common development problems with minimal loss

of performance, as well as cross-platform porting and consultancy services.

Further information on MacDX and services can be found on the company's web

site http://www.coderus.com.

MicroAPL Ltd was founded in 1979 and is based in England. It specializes in

translation tools and virtual machines for moving existing software to the

new generation of RISC processors, as well as providing consultancy

services in systems development and cross-platform porting. Further

information on PortAsm and other MicroAPL products and services can be

found on the company's web site http://www.microapl.co.uk.

A taste of Ambrosia-coming to a PC near you!

Rochester, NY -- November 14, 2002 -- Ambrosia Software, Inc. announced today that they are transforming the world of Windows PC gamers forever. Responding to overwhelming demand, Ambrosia is excited to bring both Escape Velocity Nova and Deimos Rising to a PC near you - now ready for a test drive by a select few...

Originally released for the Macintosh, both titles have quickly become cult classics. The adrenaline rush called Deimos Rising was one of the first games to be bundled on new computers with Apple's Mac OS X, and the twisted plotlines of Escape Velocity have left many players spinning in their swivel chairs. It was only a matter of time before the buzz about these games sparked the interest of the PC community. "Why don't we have shareware of this quality on our PCs!? We want these games too!" came the cries. To stem the tide, Ambrosia has tapped the best talent in the industry to make it a reality, and as these games near completion, they need your help!

EV Nova

The third incarnation of the Escape Velocity series finds you as a young pilot with a brand-new shuttlecraft, full power cells, and an entire universe to explore. You must choose which missions to take, which people to trust and which gear to buy. Will a rack of solar panels be more useful than a shiny new laser turret? Which ship has the best layout for your playing style? You'll be able to choose from literally hundreds of ships and upgrades in your journeys.

The high quality graphics and transparency effects of EV Nova engine are a dramatic improvement over previous versions, while the ambitious story presents you with a myriad of choices that promises extensive replayability. And if that isn't enough, players can install or create additional plugins to enhance gameplay or introduce entirely new stories, the possiblities are limitless.

Bringing this game to Windows is Contraband Entertainment, Inc. (http://contrabandent.com/), which was formed by a group of experienced game development professionals. Created to be a fresh start, Contraband has gathered some of the best game designers, artists and programmers from the last decade. Project leads at Contraband have anywhere from six to eighteen years of game development under their belts.

According to President Bill Heineman: "Contraband is delighted to be working with such a prestigious and well honored publisher such as Ambrosia. We are committed to making EV Nova a great experience on the PC as it is on the Mac."

Deimos Rising

The much-anticipated sequel to the smash hit Mars Rising - Deimos Rising is a fast-action, smooth-scrolling, heart-stopping, arcade-style game that's sure to hyphenate your social life. This sequel is about revenge. And not yours.

David Wareing has once again crafted a masterpiece of twitch gaming bliss that combines killer graphics, sounds, music, and action into an experience that'll leave you breathless. Deimos Rising features gorgeous 16 bit graphics lovingly rendered with transparency, alpha masking, and motion blur into a whirlwind of pixelized chaos. The legions of enemies you'll face go beyond hectic. Once you touch down on the menacing landscape of Deimos, you will understand...

The Deimos Rising port is underway by Trihedron LLC (http://www.trihedron.com), a software development firm specializing in game development. Formed in 2001, Trihedron draws on a decade of experience in interactive entertainment. Trihedron develops for Windows, Macintosh, and various gaming consoles.

Trihedron's Nate Trost was very excited to be working on the project: "Ambrosia has been providing Mac gamers with countless hours of entertainment for almost a decade. It's exciting to take part in bringing the Ambrosia addiction to a new platform. Mac and Windows users can finally unite behind the banner of Captain Hector!"

Wanna test?

Are you interested in helping beta test Escape Velocity Nova or Deimos Rising on Windows? If so, send us an email including your machine specs to winbetatest@ambrosiasw.com. Consider the email you send an interview for the beta test -- we are very selective, and will select testers based on the completeness and clarity of their applications. Please indicate which game you would like to test in the title of your email.

Ambrosia Software, Inc. - publisher of award winning programs for the Macintosh - distributes a full line of utility, productivity, and anti-productivity (game) software through the Internet, America Online, and CompuServe as shareware. ProjectBuilder Tip: Stuff it automatically

If you distribute your application or framework as an archive, you can save a step and have ProjectBuilder automatically create the archive.

One of ProjectBuilder's more powerful features is the ability to add shell commands as an extra build step. By doing so, you can invoke tar to create an archive for your application or framework. If you have Stuffit Deluxe 7.0, you can also use the 'stuff' command line tool.

Here's how to do it.

In the ProjectBuilder window, select the Targets tab and click on your target in the list.

Go to Build Phases and hilight on the last item, which will probably be ResourceManager Resources.

From the Project menu select New Build Phase - New Shell Script Build Phase.

In the shell script box enter:

cd ${BUILD_DIR}; tar czf ${PRODUCT_NAME}.tgz ${PRODUCT_NAME}.${WRAPPER_EXTENSION}

When you build your project, the command will automatically be executed to create the archive.

MacBreakZ! 3.4 for Mac OS X & Mac OS 9

publicspace.net is pleased to announce the release of version 3.4 of

"MacBreakZ!", a personal ergonomic assistant which monitors keyboard and

mouse activity and helps computer users structure their computer use in a

healthy manner, preventing computer-related injuries from developing.

Most of the new features in version 3.4 are designed to make the tool more

accessible to first time users.

It can be difficult for new users to get comfortable with taking regular

breaks, because this inevitably means that they need to change their work

practices.

While this frequently leads to more and not less productive work in the

long term, the inherent disruption that this entails especially at the very

beginning often leads to users giving up within the first few days.

Until now MacBreakZ! only supported break intervals within the range that

is commonly accepted to provide ergonomic and health benefits. It was

impossible to have less than one break an hour. Unfortunately many

professionals who are especially at risk from permanent damage through

overwork found this frequency to be completely unacceptable in their

everyday work and quickly discarded the program.

This is why we have decided to provide longer break intervals for people to

get used to taking regular breaks in a progressive manner. A little

prevention is often better than none at all.

  • new adaptation level recommended in the wizard

  • larger range of possible break intervals

  • new default times

  • fixed a bug that meant that MacBreakZ! did not switch back to the correct

    application

after the "Start Break Now" button was pressed

The program can be downloaded from:

http://www.publicspace.net/MacBreakZ/

Additional information about the product as well as on repetitive strain

injury is available at the same site.

CURLHandle 1.7 released

CURLHandle is a public domain Cocoa class for accessing URLs via all HTTP methods as well as FTP.

For anybody that needs to do URL access and is finding limitations with

NSURLHandle, you might want to check out CURLHandle, available at:

http://curlhandle.sourceforge.net/

This is a public domain Cocoa class that subclasses NSURLHandle and wraps

around "curl". It can be used for HTTP PUT, GET, and POST, and also ftp

and really anything else the curl handles. It also knows about HTTP

proxies, something lacking in NSURLHandle.

CURLHandle is the technology under the hood in a number of Internet-Savvy

Applications, including:

This 1.7 release wraps around the latest version of curl (7.10.2) and adds

additional Jaguar-specific support such as SSL (https:) capability.

** If you'd like to keep up on all CURLHandle developments, please

subscribe to the CURLHandle "Yahoo" Group. See the CURLHandle web site for a sign-up form.

Full Release notes for this version:

  • Wraps around curl 7.10.2.

  • Add setStringOrNumberObject:forKey: so that you can specify an

integer NSNumber as well as an NSString. Retained setString:forKey:

    for backward compatibility.

  • Adjust project for building under Mac OS X 10.2. (Project needs to

link to a few more libraries). However, you will need to build curl

under 10.1 if you wish your application to run under 10.1; see

    "DevNotes.txt".

  • Added "curl_easy_setopt([self curl], CURLOPT_UPLOAD, 1L);" to

setPutFile: to make FTP PUT easier (thanks to Mike Schrag).

  • Added setLowSpeedTime, setLowSpeedLimit methods to deal with timeout

issues (thanks to Steven W. Schuldt).

  • Got SSL working, as long as you are building curl and CURLHandle

    under 10.2.

Microsoft announces the death of Windows 95

According to this Microsoft document, Mac OS 9 isn't the only dead operating system.

Effective December 31 2002, several Microsoft operating systems reach End Of Life. All versions of MS DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows NT 3.5x already entered their non-supported phase on December 31, 2001 and will be EOL'd at the end of this year.

Windows 98 and NT 4.x will enter their non supported phase on June 30, 2003 and will reach end of life on June 30, 2004.

I know many people that are still running Windows 95 or even 3.0, and I suspect people will continue to run them for many years until their old PCs finally die.

Mozilla X 1.2 Final Released

The final release of Mozilla 1.2 for Mac OS X has been released.

What's new in this version:

  • Type ahead find works on Mac Mozilla and works correctly with IME.

  • Linux Mozilla (in the Classic theme) will pick up the native GTK theme and HTML form controls now pick up the native theme on winXP.

  • Mozilla now supports link prefetching; see the Link Prefetching FAQ for details.

  • Mozilla Mail includes a new "filter after the fact" capability so users can create a filter and then run that filter on already downloaded mail. Filter logging has also been implemented.

  • A long requested feature, show toolbars as text/icons/both, has been implemented.

  • You can launch the browser with a bookmark group as your start page. This loads several pages into tabs at startup.

  • Java compatability with Mac OS 10.2 (Jaguar) has been repaired.

For more information or to download a copy visit MacUpdate or Mozilla.org.

I tried it out & it seems fairly stable but still slow on my G4/500. I plan to stick with Chimera 0.6, which is a lot faster.

Edit Chimera's hidden preferences

Chimerachanga is a program that attempts to make it easier to turn on some of the "hidden" preferences within Chimera (Navigator) 0.6, without having to manually edit the preferences file each time.

Some of the hidden preferences you can edit include:

  • HTTP Pipelining, which supposedly makes certain sites load faster.

  • Disable Chimera's Cache, disables the on-disk cache folder that Chimera builds. This is generally not needed for higher-speed connections, and is a great battery saver for PowerBooks (less disk access).

  • Enable URL Bar Favicons, which turns on "favicons", in your URL bar. Favicons are the tiny icons that more sites are starting to put up.

  • Enable History in the Sidebar, see your browsing history in the sidebar.

  • Force Download Window to Disappear, makes sure the download window goes away immediately after you download files.

  • Set RAM Disk Cache, sets your RAM disk cache for Chimera from 10 to 50MB.

Chimerachanga is available from If Then Software. More information is avaialble here.

I've enabled the HTTP Pipelining option and I find that it makes a very noticeable difference with most sites.

EFF Releases Cybersecurity Comments

EFF recently submitted its comments on the U.S. government's

cybersecurity strategy document, The National Strategy to Secure

Cyberspace, noting three main criticisms.

First, the Strategy is so

broad that it fails to set any clear priorities for action. What are

the weakest links in cybersecurity? What are the most important

threats? What are the most important actions needed to improve

security? This failure was especially disappointing in light of the

much more concrete discussion of security issues in an earlier draft

Second, the Strategy is silent on oversight mechanisms for protecting

privacy and civil liberties, such as a privacy office with meaningful

authority, funding, staffing, and technical expertise.

Third, the Strategy relies primarily on exhortation and public-private

partnerships between government and industry. EFF is skeptical that

this approach will lead vendors to improve security to any meaningful

degree. EFF is also concerned that such partnerships signal a

"closed-door" approach to cybersecurity that will prevent the public

from learning about vulnerabilities, security breaches, and corrective

action (and may harm competition and innovation).

Other points:

  • The problem of "buggy code" needs to be openly confronted.

  • Encryption played only a small part in the recommendations.

  • Unrealistic assumptions were made about the ability of home and

small business users to improve security.

  • Free software's potential for enhancing security was ignored.

  • The Strategy endorsed the Council of Europe Convention on

Cybercrime, which poses serious privacy and civil liberties

    issues.

  • Legislation like the DMCA, CBDTPA, and the Berman P2P "hacking"

bill are not good for cybersecurity.

Many of these themes were highlighted in a 2002 National Research

Council report, Cybersecurity Today and Tomorrow: Pay Now or Pay

Later, available at:

http://www.nap.edu/html/cybersecurity/.

Apple Security Update 2002-11-21

Apple has released a new security update for Mac OS X 10.2, which is now available from your Software Update settings panel.

This Security Update fixes potential vulnerabilities introduced in BIND, the domain server and client library software package from Internet Software Consortium (ISC), that is shipped with Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server. BIND version 8.3.4 addresses the recently-discovered potential vulnerabilities where an unauthorized person may disrupt the normal operation of the DNS name service. BIND is not activated by default on Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server.

Rob McNair-Huff reports that installing the update changed some of his system settings, including mouse speed and date/time format.

MacHack issues call for speakers

This is a great time to be in the Macintosh world. A major revision of the Mac OS X operating system and many new tools provide a powerful foundation waiting to be exploited by developers. MacHack: The Annual Conference For Developers, By Developers is the premier forum for Mac OS developers to discuss, upgrade and show off their skills.

As always, MacHack sessions provide insight into a variety of topics aimed at the technically astute. And as always, marketers will remain at home.

MacHack solicits and accepts sessions on a wide variety of topics related to software and hardware development. Speakers for accepted sessions receive a discount for admission to the conference.

The MacHack session planners have laid out seven categories that cater to a range of interests:

  • New Tools: leverage the hidden power of tools included with OS X

  • Hacking under OS X: new tricks for a new dogcow

  • Business development: make a living writing software; learn from project and product case studies

  • Alternative platforms: experiment with and learn about Palm OS, LEGO MindStorms, Linux, and others

  • Languages: make the most of your old favorites and learn some new ones

  • Code clinics: learn from senior developers and exchange techniques and tips

  • Yoot sessions for new and junior developers

MacHack sessions typically run about an hour. Speakers present to a "hands on" audience, an audience ready to test new ideas and try them out. For that reason, supporting code examples are strongly encouraged. While many new technologies are commercial, MacHack strongly discourages overt marketing.

Submit session ideas, outlines and proposals by February 1, 2003 at http://www.machack.com/sessionssubmission.php or link through from the main page. Speakers will be notified as their proposals are accepted. Don't worry too much about falling strictly within the category boundaries. Categories will be bound at run-time.

MacHack 18 will take place June 19-21, 2003, in Dearborn, Michigan. More information is available on the Web from http://www.machack.com/.

For attendees, registration discounts are available for early action. Full attendees can register online for $450 (before 02/28/03), a savings of $100 off the regular registration rate. Students can register for $50 which includes access to the entire conference. Total attendance is limited to 400. Student attendance is limited to 50. More details are available on the conference website.

Powerbacks∆ Sampler reaches a quarter million users

Blue Worx, a Phoenix, Arizona based graphic design firm, reaches 250,000 presenters with it's free sampler of 100 unique PowerPoint∆ background templates.

The Powerbacks∆ flock now has the contingent of a "Second City" enrolled in it's following. Based on creator Gary Blue's alternative visions, the Powerbacks∆ series offers of innovative and interpretive collection of images not found in mainstream packages. Its creative categories track many of today's trends and social issues with a bold and sometimes shocking visual array. The other half of the collection is dedicated to stylistic and atmospheric looks to make your presentation stand out from the others on any agenda as the most memorable.

Now evolving into a second CD/download collection Powerbacks∆ Slide Alchemy has found great acceptance in many education and religious circles. Along with the trendsetters of the corporate vanguard, the risk takers and motivators, the series flourishes as an icon of creative fervor in sea of presentation blandness and conformity. Powerbacks∆ appeals not to the status-quo user but to presenters who are out to influence our world and make a difference with the audience they communicate with.

Microsoft∆ is responsible for at least half of the success that Powerbacks∆ enjoy. They have offered the free trial internationally from their office site for the last year and doubled the Sampler's exposure to the public. The first complete CD/download, Slide Alchemy One, is available online now with the sequel, Slide Alchemy Two, available on a subscription basis as it is produced in monthly issues.

We are especially excited about our WebObjects hosting. It comes standard with quite a few of our hosting plans.” WebObjects is Apple’s Java based application server that is used to develop and deploy feature rich Internet applications. Asante FR1004AL Wireless Router

Just got my new wireless router, I replaced a VERY reliable FR3004 with this wireless for my powerbook and Dual g4 access. I am using the parallel port to connect an epson 740 and sharing between a Win 98 (yuck) box and my g4 & laptop.

I took it out of the box and put the router in place, moving the existing wired router cables to this one. Fired it up, and then went to the brower to setup for my static IP. Note, if you have dynamic addressing, it works without configuring it. I recommend you go ahead through as you will want to change the password.

I took one of the removable antennae off and replaced it with one I got from Custom craft (the boat people and marine equipment) and now have an omni directional antennae on it. I have coverage around my house for about a block with that thing and have full 11mb transfer anywhere in my house. I enabled the MAC address level security and WEP and it didn't slow it down that I could tell.

I don't necessarily love the box, typical PC style metal box, I liked the FR3004's sleek stackable case a little better.

Interface and ease of use and mac compatibility are FAR better than the Linksys I just returned to fry's.

I have had it 2 weeks, got one of the first ones out. I'll let you know if I come up with any problems.

Upgrading LinkSys firmware from Mac OS X

LinkSys doesn't support Macs and doesn't provide a way for Mac users to upgrade firmware on their routers. However, it's very easy to upgrade the firmware from Mac OS X.

LinkSys routers uses the standard TFTP protocol (which is not the same as FTP) to upgrade the firmware. Like most Unix systems, Mac OS X has a standard tftp command that can be used to upgrade the firmware. However, the standard tftp command doesn't support passwords, so it's necessary to get rid of the router's password before upgrading and then reset the password after you finish.

After downloading the upgrade, unstuff it and open the terminal.

In your web browser, go to http://192.168.1.1/, click on the password tab and blank out the password.

Back in the terminal window, after making sure you're in the upgrade directory, which should contain a file called code.bin type the following commands (prompts shown in bold):

[~/befsr-fw-1433 Folder]% tftp

tftp> connect 192.168.1.1

tftp> binary

tftp> put code.bin

tftp> quit

At this point you'll be back at the command prompt.

Once again go to http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser. It should now show the new firmware version number. Click on the password tab and set the password again to secure your router.

Using a Windows iPod with a Mac

iPods for Windows seem to be easier to find than iPods for Mac, so here's how you can use a Windows iPod with your Mac.

First, you'll need to download the following from Apple:

Run the iPod Software Updater, which you'll find in your Utilities folder and connect the iPod to a FireWire port on your Mac. I found that it won't work if I connect it to a FireWire passthrough port on my external FireWire drive. It will give you a warning that the iPod doesn't have the correct software installed and will allow you to restore it. After the software restore completes, you can then use the iPod normally.

Microsoft Shared Source CLI for Mac OS X

The Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) is the ECMA standard that describes the core of the .NET Framework world. The Shared Source CLI is a compressed archive of the source code to a working implementation of the ECMA CLI and the ECMA C# language specification.

This implementation builds and runs on Windows XP, the FreeBSD operating system, and Mac OS X 10.2. It is released under a shared source initiative.

The Shared Source CLI goes beyond the printed specification of the ECMA standards, providing a working implementation for CLI developers to explore and understand. It will be of interest to academics and researchers wishing to teach and explore modern programming language concepts, and to .NET developers interested in how the technology works.

The Shared Source CLI archive contains the following technologies in source code form:

  • An implementation of the runtime for the Common Language Infrastructure (ECMA-335) that builds and runs on Windows XP, the FreeBSD operating system, and Mac OS X 10.2.

  • Compilers that work with the Shared Source CLI for C# (ECMA-334) and JScript.

  • Development tools for working with the Shared Source CLI such as assembler/disassemblers (ilasm, ildasm), a debugger (cordbg), metadata introspection (metainfo), and other utilities.

  • The Platform Adaptation Layer (PAL) used to port the Shared Source CLI from Windows XP to FreeBSD and Mac OS X.

  • Build environment tools (nmake, build, and others).

  • Documentation for the implementation.

  • Test suites used to verify the implementation.

  • A rich set of sample code and tools for working with the Shared Source CLI.

There is a wealth of programming language technology in the Shared Source CLI. It is likely to be of interest to a wide audience, including:

  • Developers interested in the internal workings of the .NET Framework can explore this implementation of the CLI to see how garbage collection works, JIT compilation and verification is handled, security protocols implemented, and the organization of frameworks and virtual object systems.

  • Teachers and researchers doing work with advanced compiler technology. Research projects into language extensions, JIT optimizations, and modern garbage collection all have a basis in the Shared Source CLI. Modern compiler courses can be based on the C# or JScript languages implemented on the CLI.

  • People developing their own CLI implementations will find the Shared Source CLI an indispensable guide and adjunct to the ECMA standards.

Mac OS X System Requirements:

  • Mac OS X version 10.2.

  • Apple Developer Tools.

  • The BSD subsystem installed.

  • 256 MB memory, 512 MB (recommended).

  • One gigabyte of free disk space.

For more information or to download the source code, visit MSDN Downloads.

What You'll See in IE 6

I wrote an interesting editorial over at MacMerc about what Microsoft will steal in IE 6. In my opinion they'll add 5 big things, that aren't new. I list 'em off and describe each one. Join the party, or comment on what you think's going to happen.

iSync & Backup without .Mac?

Jeremy Beker & Otto Moorbeek have reverse engineered iSync and Backup in hopes of opening them to non .Mac members.

Jeremy's site has an overview of iSync's protocols, although he still doesn't have a functional .Mac substitute.

Otto has a working .Mac substitute for use with Apple's Backup utility. It involves enabling some features of Mac OS X's built-in Apache server and forcing requests for www.mac.com to go to your own machine. This does prevent some other .Mac functions from working.

It would be great if Apple could provide these services with Mac OS X Server & XServe, so administrators can set up their own local .Mac service for their users instead of depending on Apple's centralized .Mac server.

built exclusively for Mac∆ OS X, is now available from Econ Technologies.

DayChaser contains all the tools for easy management of your time. Go to

www.econtechnologies.com for all the details on DayChaser and see how you

can get your life in order.

DayChaser is different from most calendar applications because it works with

separate Calendar Documents. A Calendar Document is just a file - just like

any word processor or spreadsheet document. It may be stored anywhere on

your hard disk, copied, duplicated, sent to friends - whatever you heart

desires. Because DayChaser works with individual files, it offers the

flexibility of being able to create multiple calendar documents for

different purposes. You can even work with multiple calendars simultaneously

and exchange entries between them.

DayChaser allows you to create calendar documents to manage your time by

scheduling entries. Entries are comprised of appointments, events, memos,

and tasks. Calendar documents can be viewed by year, month, week, day or by

using accompanying list windows to display entries in an outline list view.

DayChaser automatically reminds you of events by displaying an alert window

or sending an email message - even when the program isn’t running!

All aspects of DayChaser are fully customizable including Toolbars,

Categories, Entries, Filters, and Calendar views. Organize your entries and

give your calendars a personal touch by changing colors, fonts, styles, and

more. Group like entries together by adding categories. You can even create

your own categories. View related entries using the filter and add your own

criteria to focus directly in on specific entries.

“We offer a great alternative to other personal organizers like iCal. The

more choices available, the better it is for Mac users,” said Joseph Japes,

Marketing Director of Econ Technologies.

DayChaser is fully integrated with the Mac OS X 10.2 (“Jaguar”) Address Book

and will auto complete email contacts or you can simply drag them over.

DayChaser works great on all earlier versions of Mac OS X too!

Griffin Technology Introduces Limited Edition Black PowerMate

Ultra cool black & blue PowerMate available exclusively online at Griffin

Technology website

To celebrate the one year anniversary and

success of PowerMate, Griffin Technology, Inc. today announced the release

of a PowerMate Black Limited Edition – available exclusively online.

PowerMate combines beautiful design and ease of use into a unique award

winning multimedia controller that can be used as a volume knob, or

programmed for any number of other uses such as a jog/shuttle wheel for

movie editing or a scroll wheel for long documents. PowerMate in its

standard brushed aluminum finish will now be joined for a short time by a

beautiful solid black version.

One year ago this week, Griffin Technology introduced an entirely new kind

of input device with the PowerMate. Resembling a giant volume knob ripped

off an expensive hi-fi stereo, PowerMate is made of anodized brushed

aluminum. Its solid weight and tactile feel is a significant departure from

most typical plastic computer peripherals. The brushed aluminum industrial

design combined with a blue pulsing glow emanating from underneath the

PowerMate is always an immediate attention getter. Its beauty is better seen

than described.

But beneath its good looks lies a multifunctional multifaceted programmable

USB device. Out of the box, PowerMate becomes the computer’s volume knob it

never had – controlling overall system volume and muting with a push of its

integrated button. It also comes with preset settings for several major apps

including iTunes, iMovie, Internet Explorer and others. Users may then

modify and tweak the existing settings or better yet – add new settings and

functions for any application with key commands. Users may create and store

as many settings as they wish. PowerMate will store them all and activate

the setting for whichever app is active.

"Response to this simple little knob over the last 12 months has been

amazing. People who were first drawn in by PowerMate’s stunning good looks

have been rewarded by its truly useful functionality. Its design has become

the catalyst that has driven the reinvention of our entire company. As a

thank you and to celebrate PowerMate’s success, we’ve made a few unique

black PowerMates to share with our friends" says Paul Griffin, CEO and

Founder of Griffin Technology.

Pricing & Availability: PowerMate – Black Limited Edition retails for $45 USD

and is available exclusively at the Griffin Technology website located at
