Palo Alto, California – Leo Pad’s 2, the sequel to the highly acclaimed inaugural app by Kidaptive, Inc., has been released in iTunes for iPad. Kidaptive, a team of Stanford University educational researchers and award-winning animators and writers, released Leo’s Pad Appisode 1 (“Gally’s Birthday”) in December 2012. The free app tells the story of a young Leonardo da Vinci helping his friend Galileo (Gally) build a telescope to look at the stars.
Leo’s Pad 2 (“Rocket to the Stars”) continues the adventure as Leo and Gally, along with their friend Marie Curie, create the design for Gally’s rocket and blast off into space.
The beautifully-rendered highest quality 3-D apps for preschoolers were built by an Emmy Award-winning creative director, Dan Danko, whose team members have worked on shows such as Rugrats, Stanley, and WordWorld, according to P.J. Gunsagar, co-founder and CEO of Kidaptive. Gunsagar also is a co-founder of Prana Studios, Kidaptive’s animation partner and the studio behind DisneyToon Studios Tinker Bell films.
“We have assembled an amazing team of experts in learning sciences, animation, and software development to create transformative experiences for kids and parents,” said Gunsagar. “Something truly magical is happening by combining our unique talents in a unique way.”
Both Leo’s Pad “appisodes,” or animated episodes, are envisioned as the beginning of a series of educational apps that adapt learning exercises as a child plays, said Dylan Arena, co-founder and Chief Learning Officer of Kidaptive. Arena holds a Ph.D. in Learning Sciences and Technology Design from Stanford.
As the child completes activities, the apps will measure the user’s responses along more than 70 dimensions of learning. Backed by decades of educational research, the games assess a child’s performance and automatically adjust to create an optimal learning situation for the user. A coming “Parent Dashboard” will offer comprehensive feedback on a child’s achievement in these 70 dimensions, along with suggestions for how to support that child’s progress outside of “tablet time.”
“There are many good apps that address some component of early learning, but there’s nothing else out there that provides a comprehensive early-learning curriculum to support learners in all the areas that are crucial for long-term success,” said Dr. Arena. “We hope to help parents understand how to help their children succeed in areas beyond the ABC’s and 123’s – things like delay of gratification, impulse control, spatial reasoning, and turn-taking.”
